Rudge Wheels
I have a 1965 356 C with disc brakes. I would like to find a set of Rudge windmill mags for this car. Should be in good shape and not bent.

Hi Klaus,
I understand what you mean. I have them on my 65 C Coupe. I think the wheels are known as "star alloys" or "Porsche alloys", I'm sure there are other names. I used 5.5 x 14 Porsche star alloys that came off of early 914's and certain 911/912's (I don't remember the year). I had two objectives in mind, change the wheels, and lower the car. The 14's with low profile tires lowered the car quite a bit. When I bought the wheels, which are pretty hard to find in 14 inch size, I had them refinished - flat black with only the outer portion of the rim polished shinny brignt. The alloy wheels are also a lot lighter than the stock 4.5 x 15 Porsche chrome wheels. They look great. I did have some problems with the tires rubbing the inside of the fender front and rear. The solution was a 1/4 inch spacer on the front wheels, and grinding off about 1/2 inch of the lip of the piece that holds the rubber bump damper up under the rear fenders. Having done that, everything clears even on tight turns. I like the change, but can easily put the stock chrome wheels back on. Regards, Charlie White Scottsdale, Arizona |

Thanks for the data, now are you willing to sell them or do you have a source of 4 additional wheels? I think the 14 inch would be nice but I am willing to stay with 15 inch if necessary.

I see these wheels come up for sale occassionally on Ebay, both
14's and 15's. I would recommend not going bigger than 15 x 15.5. Don't want to sell mine, but you might seek a seller via the 356 Registry Talk list, sign up at: http://www.356registry.org/ Sign up for the Talk list, which is a email list. Send an email to the common email address, and 1500+ guys get it. Good place to find stuff and get advice on 356's and parts. Also try the 912 Registry at: http://www.356registry.org/ Post a wanted ad. Regards, Charlie White Scottsdale, Arizona USA |

I have a set of 5.5X14 Fuchs, I was going to use them on a 914, but I really want 7X15s for it.

I saw a set of Rudges today Sat.14 at the German Autofest in Ventura. They were out in the swapmeet area. Excellent condition. They looked like they were 14's with the knock-offs.(Windmill) Very rare and pricey.
Just like the ones on Steve McQueens Speedster. Bobby Last edited by Bobboloo; 09-15-2002 at 12:47 AM.. |
