do valve covers have a specific year on them?
are valve covers stamped with date codes?
Just curious what the number on the inside of the valve cover represents?

Can’t speak for all of them, but the valve covers on mine are date stamped and match within a few months of my cars born on date.

The upper valve covers that I have just have a 85 number on them, and I'm trying to understand if that is the year or what.

Are there dots around the "85"?
Not sure if this applies to the valve covers, but many of the Porsche engine parts are date coded by a number (year) surrounded by a circle of dots (number of dots = month) Of course the dots aren't so obvious on parts made early in the year |

Just curious then... does the date on the valve covers match the date of the car?

The valve cover dates can't be after the production run of the car and be original. They should be within a few months prior or up to though.

valve covers
Here's my original valve covers from my March '83 SC. The date stamp on these has the week of production and the year. I wouldn't worry if the valve covers don't match your car as they can be replaced at any time by new or used parts. As long as they are there and function correctly you're good to go.
