The day has finally come: PAINT and RESTO!
It's taken about a year to get the cash together, but now the anticipated repaint and restoration process has begun!!!!! Dropped off my '89 S.A. Edition Coupe with Mr. John Holt at Hot Wheels Imports yesterday so the Master can get started on making her brand-spanking new again. We'll be spraying Glasurit and the interior will get a complete makeover.
I spent a good deal of time interviewing many paint shops and I can say, without any reserve, that I finally made the proper connection with a Pro shop. Great guy to talk to ........very knowledgeable gent that's certain to produce professional results. No doubt this guy will deliver the goods. There are many boxes of brand new stuff that will go on the car (to the tune of ~$6K) and she'll look like she came off of the showroom floor when I'm done. Now comes the work of planning on the materials for the interior resto. Glad there's some good threads out there on this very subject....I just need to select the proper supplier of the BEST materials out there. I would welcome any comments relating to anyone's experiences with particular material sources. An exciting venture,..and a stressful one, at that. Will keep you guys updated on my processes. Luckily, a PP member 'round here does work there part time and will be assisting me with gathering pics (as I'm located a hundred miles South of John's shop). John has agreed to take a few pics here and there, as well..... STOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() Here's the first pic from John...light work, of course,..but provides a high degree of excitement knowing the process has actually begun!!!!!! BEST to all! Doyle ![]()

That's great! I'm planning to take my car to Mr. Holt soon. Keep us posted with the progress!
I've found Autos International to have excellent quality interior materials and they are really, really good to work with. |

I plan to contact them tomorrow.
I'm awaiting a response from Heritage, as I hear their stuff is top notch (however, not cheap). I'll be replacing all bolsters, as well. I'll ship my stuff, if necc'y, in order to have it professionally done.....the paint part is easily handled by Professor Holt,..thankfully, I've no concerns there,..THAT'S in good hands, for sure. This interior stuff is a bit more challenging for me.....and a bit nerve wracking, as I want it perfect,..with the proper materials. Heritage has some interesting reads on materials....heads up, I'd say. We'll see,..time to go through the motions, eh? Thanks for your response! BEST! Doyle

Doyle,
I am really interested to see it when complete. I am sure its going to look brand new. I think you will find the interior work not as difficult as you anticipate. Rattlesnk has a great deal of knowledge himself--I think you are in quite capable hands. SUBSCRIBED!

Packaging up all gauges today to ship 'em out to NHS. The gauges work but I want them "new" again! Have instructed them to change out ALL of the electrolytic caps, freshen up any/all gears, check all calibrations, etc.
Anything wrong with requesting ALL glass faceplates? They stated that only the speedo and clock are glass and the rest are plastic. I don't see why they ALL can't be glass. NO MODS to the displays, except for the drop-in LED replacements for the BA7's (which I will do today thanks to ETARGA!) and insertion of desiccant packs (similar to what's loaded in the headlamps) within ALL gauges. I have only one gauge that will occasionally demonstrate a small bit of condensation,..hopefully my approach will minimize any moisture within the gauges. Need to figure out how to get my spreadsheet uploaded here so that anyone interested can see what I'm installing and "how much" ($$). Don't mind sharing that, at all. Thanks for the interest, Mig and Justin. I realize this a Tech Forum and hope no one minds my postings here vs. the body/paint forum. BEST to all! Doyle

Very exciting! Have you decided on single or two stage paint?

Up to the Painter,...he will probably follow what was done originally. He told me earlier, but I forgot....something like that is ALL his professional call.
I'll double-check and post back as to exactly what he plans to do. I can tell you it's gonna' be Glasurit that goes down. BEST! Doyle

Hey Doyle - I saw your car yesterday at the shop as I was dropping off a new suspension pan and other small bits. My car will be sitting a couple of bays down form your I guess.
![]() I plan to go back there on Monday to drop off some more parts and maybe do some grunt work on the car if you need anything. - Farrell

If you're going for originality then it should be single stage. I'm facing the same decision for my '81 SC...

Way cool Farrell !!!!!!! What grunt work will you be doing?
@LenS: that was my recollection as to originality. He will go with what the Factory did,..you never know: I may just get that extra coat of clear coat!!!!!! I'll double-check, still. What decision are you facing, if you're not going with original approach? Just curious..... If you're in there with your camera, do snap some pics for me, as I'm a bit South of you guys. Rattlesnk will be checking in on her....... Need to determine what value to place on the insurance on the gauges ,..time for some research as to "worst-case condition"...... Looking forward to hearing on your work, too. Hopefully some things will surface that's of value to the board. BEST! Doyle

Hi, good luck with the project, I'm still saving for my repaint(color me envious).
Quick question, how much, if you don't mind me asking to repaint the car? |

Glasurit 22-line single stage is what was used on my car. Very happy with the results but I think silver of that era was probably a base coat / clear coat application.

Since several have PM'd me about costs, I'd thought I'd oblige. Can't seem to post any spreadsheets so I thought I'd share the bits and pieces that are involved with the restoration:

The above items total about $6K. (almost ALL from our HOST!). Yeap,..a chunk of change,..to help Uncle Wayne pay his rent! I've still to make arrangements with a vendor to take care of the interior redo (everything) so that portion of the cost has yet to be determined and is not included in the above data. This will (ultimately) be a chunk of change, as I'm going back with full leather. All of the gauges have been shipped to NHS for rework. This cost is not included in the above data Should come to roughly under $1K on that end. The specific cost for the repaint is yet to be determined. We've a general range but will have to see what shakes out in the end. I would want to get John's blessing on posting any repaint costs, in any case. She has a few small rust spots around the windshield that will need rework. That's a taste of my insanity. Do you sense an attempt at making her new again? I cringe when I make use of the sigma button on the spreadsheet. Oh well: it is what it is. ![]() BEST! Doyle

Wow Doyle that is quite a list but a worthwhile investment in my opinion. I was planning on re-using a lot of the exterior rubber on my car but once the paint looks so pretty the rest of the trim really shows its age. I think the only rubber parts I re-used were the quarter window seals and now I get some wind noise around those I have regretted not putting new ones on. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
