You saw my picture on page 2 right? I had to cut mine out too. As I'm guessing you found out, once you cut down the nut enough the tension will break and it'll release nice and easy.

If you're ultimately replacing both then it's no harm no foul.

I'm so intrigued by this but can't wrap my physics brain around how extending the lever arm would change how my torque wrench functions. It should be noted that I have the click click type of wrench that breaks at the ratchet end, and not the beep beep type that is likely 100x more accurate.

Extending the handle makes no difference. The extension have to be on the other side of the "break point" to work.

while you're not wrong, this doesn't apply to torquing beyond the limit of a torque wrench. The wrench can physically keep going, but it won't be able to measure/quantify the torque applied...which happens to be the whole point of using a torque wrench. At that point, you may as well use a breaker bar and turn it until it's GNT.

Similarly, you can keep turning the knob on your stereo forever, but you will reach the limit of what it can output. Continuing to turn the knob does not increase volume past it's limit.
