Working on making the models of the IROC bumper. This is a massive pain in the ass because this thing has SOO MANY compound curves. Hopefully tomorrow, I'll be done with this part, and I can start actually layout out the radiator and start designing the bumper impact bar.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could build and customize your own G model with a web app with colours, bumpers, spoilers, wheels, decals, etc?

Finally got the IROC bumper model completed in Fusion 360. Accurate to about +/- 1mm. Was a major pain in the ass because of all those compound curves.

Modeled this with a combination of manual scanning the measurements, and importing a bunch of photographs.
Now that I've got this, I can start designing the bumper impact bar, and the radiator mounts.

Here's a link to the online version of the model so you can play with it.

Coming along nicely. I have to admit when I first opened the thread and saw that terrible low res model in the first post I didn't have high hopes, but you've proven to be pretty capable at modeling. The only issues I see are more surface related and probably make no difference to your project, so I understand. I pulled your model into keyshot and rendered out an image.

On the topic of those blueprints, from what I've seen there are good ones of the short wheelbase early 911 but I can't find anything for the long wheelbase.

Hi, Andy

My CAD modelling skills are not as advanced as yours and Optimusglen, but I would like to start to build a model of my 1970 coupe in SW2012. The purpose would just be an environment file to design various parts around. Would you mind sharing where you found the long hood RS surface file and where you found the factory manual blueprints.
Nice work, please keep posting, I like seeing what is possible with various modelling software.

Hi Andy, I'm looking for a 3d model of the hood (long hood). Is it possible to use your model for this?

Thanks

I see some potential issues with the surface fidelity, though being what it is it's very well done.

The top right is what the light will do on the finished part. The reflections are not running consistent along the bumper from and the transitions into the side struggle to track.

I recreated a section of the upper portion of the bumper from your data to show an example of reflection flow that might be more ideal. I did remove the small blisters you had, as they would be sub-dominant to the main surface and added on the clean simple surface.

Just my 2 cents for what its worth, I want this to turn out amazing.

I've been using AutoCad and Revit to design houses and "thought" I was proficient. You guys are nuts! This is some great work!

Sweet. I can 3dprint myself a ducktail.

I don’t have a model, that’s the issue. I manually made a model of the RSR bumper, but I ended up selling it, and going a different route.

I never liked the look of the RSR style, so I’m making my own carbon fiber cover, inspired by the 550 spider look.

I’m just manually designing it, with foam and sandpaper. Because I couldn’t find a model of the whole car, it’s just simpler to shape it by hand.

Looks good, what software did you use?

I’m not very good with the sculpt tools in fusion 360, I’m much more of a standard mechanical drawing kind of guy.

I’ve decided not to use the RSR bumper, never liked to look of it, and it didn’t fit right. I like the older, classic look of the early 911s, 356 and 550 spider, so I’m making a carbon fiber cover inspired by the 550 spider look.

I’m just doing the design manually, with foam and sandpaper, then laying glass mold over it. Because I couldn’t find a 3D model of the car, I think it’s just easier to do the design manually.

Yea, for certain things it would be.

I plan to design and 3d model a grille insert for my duck fin over winter and 3d print a prototype, we'll see how it goes.

I use Autostudio from autodesk.

Hi Andy, Love your work. I am in the process of build a 911 track car. Am wondering if you have made this available at all?. I'm looking to design my own body kit to suit my modified wheel base kind of like the RWB style.

Regards

Nick

Hi Andy,

Any updates or did you abandon the 3D modelling altogether? I would like to maybe pick up where you left off and use some guidance from both yourself and/or Geronimo to perfect the design. I have a young background with 3D modelling but am picking up the skill sets quickly. My skills are more in mechanical fabrication and I am also learning composites. I would like to design a kit car 911 of sorts as the real ones are unattainable to me at this point. I will try to hone some skills in the mean time by designing a formula racing simulation cockpit that I will be building - sort of a tube frame assembly with fiberglass outer shell and inner tub fused together.

I will be then transferring this skill set to the 911 where I would like to create a similar inner/outer fiberglass tub/and body of a 911 that will have a tube frame cage and front and rear subframes for support and rigidity. I am not expecting it to transpire overnight but I need to start somewhere. I think I could probably work with your model to finalize an outside shell that is accurate to within +/- 1mm and begin designing the underpinnings to the actual chassis from there.

I will study the suspension geometry and try to understand where it was strong and where it was weak and improve upon that with modern understandings, but likely won't deviate a whole lot. Maybe even make it exact so that as many factory/aftermarket parts will bolt up as possible.

Can I potentially download your 3D models and see where to begin? The original blue prints would be helpful too. Do we know of other 911 blue prints are available? I.E. 964/993? Part of me would feel more comfortable modelling by hand, however, as mentioned I do not have a 911 to start with and will be creating it from scratch. I plant to build a light duty CNC table to cut bucks from foam, reinforce them, create molds, and begin punching out the pieces. Not for the purposes of resale as the 911 seems to be a tricky one for Porsche to let go to the kit car world. Likely due to the fact that the model lineage is still alive today.

Thanks for any and all help!

Reading through this thread I’m now thinking I should try scanning my car with my iphone’s lidar scanner…

Good luck with that. Try scanning something smaller and see how much data needs cleanup. Maybe in a few years.

Hi @Andy,

Absolutely outstanding project.

Is there any chance you uploaded the CAD somewhere ?

Best
