I call him, Ral. Euro backdate basketcase.

I'm a glutton for punishment! But this car was too sweet to pass up. My buddy did a bunch of work to it, and now it's all mine. I am going to get it running then the body work. He went to GREAT lengths to make sure everything was straight and square.

In his warm garage...

Sat outside for a bit...

First up!

The engine is quite grimy and dirty. Should I pull it to clean it or get it running first, then remove it? Can it be cleaned in situ?

Welcome to the forum! I wondered when we'd see that car again, it's too bad Jeff couldn't keep it.

He and I were in touch off and on and I know he's a busy guy. A project like this is awfully time consuming.

Have fun with the project most of all. Take care of any surface rust and get some epoxy primer on that bare metal before you do anything else. My advice to Jeff was to take it from its current state and get it running and driving even in primer, mostly so he could enjoy and build up some motivation.

Pulling the motor is easy and will make it a lot easier to clean.

Awesome! keep posting updates. I think most folks will recommend an engine drop to clean and do some basic areas/seals. I was hard headed and did it situ. Just jack up the back to save your back. :-)

I would take it out to:

1) learn how to take it out
2) clean it on a stand where you can get everywhere and clean it nicely
3) to see hidden areas that caused the leaks in the first place so you can fix those and not undo all your initial cleaning sometime down the road (I hate fixing things twice)

Maximum punishment but maximum reward.

Yesss, Jeff did a meticulous job on the body. He levelled the garage, then the car and that's the little lines all over it. It has some realllly nice gaps all around. He did much more work than I would have so I'm happy to own it now.

I plan to get the engine running again, it needs a new exhaust. And then when I know all is right, I will remove it to clean it up. Also it's almost spring here!

Removed some stuff; (I anyone wants the removed stuff, let me know!)

I'd keep the gas tank if I were you

The car looks familiar but I can't place it. Was there a build thread?

I don't think so, but it was for sale. I think the ad might still be in the Canadian corner.

The plan; get it running and driving. It needs an exhaust to fit under the new bumper. Then take out engine, detail it. Fix the body and paint it.

That's likely where I saw it, the writing on the white paint is what stuck with me.

I'm sending you a text for a couple unrelated parts I'm after, sort of 914 stuff. Effin rabbit hole this hobby.

How does it run? If you're going t do engine work, definitely drop the motor. If it runs, maybe you want to enjoy driving it a bit while tackling the bodywork.

Got your text Jim, I'll look for 914 parts as well

And I have videos and assurance it did run well so I don't want to waste spring/summer durdling around fixing things when I could be driving it. But I have done an engine drop before and it's only 4 bolts and a few oil hoses.

Oil change, piston fogger and cranking time soon! Then I have to figure out a very simple gas tank venting system before I replace the tank and wiring.

Nice car. Love the wheels. Are they 7x16 and 9x16?

I'm partial to driving my 911 as much as possible so I would get it running well and clean the engine up in the car. I've done that with my 930. A grimy engine running well is a well running engine. Once the engine is out you might not be driving it for a long time as you repair other things and life gets in the way...

Not sure of the size of the Fuchs

Was stalled for a bit with the weather, but it's nice so back at it! I had a problem getting the oil to thermostat line on. I dipped one end into CLR and cleaned it. Chased the threads with a knife and back on!!!

Also hooked up the wiring, did the oil change and cranked her over! Need fuel lines and I plan to run her after a long wait.

Any tips/ideas before I do? Ral doesn't have an exhaust so I expect him to be quite louddd!

And...

The fanbelt is loose (710 x 10), 3 shims on both sides, where do I put the shims to make it tighter?

I think the normal procedure is to put more shims (maybe all six) on the outside. If that makes the belt too tight then put one shim on the Inside.

Long hood cars didn't come with power brakes/MC in the trunk. So what is the base tub?

Yes, I will shim x 5 outside.

And it's a 1980 Euro.
