Help AC Compressor Bracket Removal

87 Carrera

I have all the nuts and bolts above and below removed but now that the bracket is loose I can't get it off.

When I lift it up it bumps against green (don't know what that is) and I don't get enough clearance to pull out the bolt by the fan (red).

Any suggestions? Tried searching.

The area in green is the fuel rail. You may have to remove the engine tin on the fan side of the engine to allow you to swing the bracket out of the way. On my '88 the bracket is not restricted.

Thank you. Yup that fuel rail is what's keeping me from lifting the bracket enough to slide it leftward to free the fan side bolt.

Just took a look, not sure how removing tin would help.

AC Bracket removal

I installed just such a bracket on my 78 SC instead of the heavy steel one that was originally on my car. There is a removable bracket attached to the cylinder head held on by two bolts under your fuel rail. From the front of your large bracket in side the small rectangular opening there is an 8mm Allen bolt that secures the rear bracket to the large mounting plate. Try removing that bolt and you should be able to lift up the main mounting bracket. I hope that this makes some sense...

As noted in the previous post, disconnect bracket 17 from the main compressor mount, then you might be able to lift it away.
Picture below may help show the clearances available.

Thank you both!

I was headed down that route of separating #17. Very hard to get in there and I couldn't even figure out what size Allen #18 took. Now that I at least know what size to use, will try again.

Thank you! And I found one. Now I hope my 74 engine has the stud threads for the cantilevered arm that goes back into the engine... I assume that's also used for the fan shroud mount.

On a 1974 I believe the steel support bracket over cylinder 4 was held down with 2 M6 x 18 bolts, and there may have been a washer spacer under the cooling shroud. So if you try to mount the 84-89 support bracket and you have bolts rather than studs, just check your stack height in case the aluminum bracket is thicker than the steel version bracket.

Haven't got the thing off yet (had to put the muffler back on and don't have the energy to start over) but I can confirm that it's actually a 6mm Allen that goes in there.

Put the wrench in the opening towards the back of the car. There's an opening by the screw head that lets you use your other hand to guide it on. The sucker's on real tight.

6mm allen socket and ratchet for leverege. Good luck using that little allen wrench. Keep the small bracket bolted down in the process.
