Be sure to install the head assemblies with crank at Z1 and keyways on the cams at 12 o'clock.

Will do.

My only question (about Installing the complete Cam Tower Assembly, Since I had some difficulties with the Cam chain Covers And chain)

Do you have the Cam Chain Covers on the Engine Before Installing And Dip the Nose Of the Cam into the Hole?

john walker's workshop 07-06-2019 05:46 AM

No. They go on later.

Resurface them on their case side. 80 grit on a flat surface.

I now have my Drill Press Table That j turned to +/- 0.001”. Great idea because after removing the Gasket I still did not like how they looked. Things are Progressing Nicely.

Trying to find a Rubber Grommet That I can use for the Wiring where it goes into the Fiberglass engine cover to the Alternator. Mine was soo hard even cutting it was Difficult. I found one on Fleabay but am not paying $35.

Most hardware stores carry rubber grommets. Otherwise there's Grainger or McMasterCarr online.

Head Gaskets

New Question?

There are “2” sides of the Ring Head Gaskets. If I use the Larger side down, there is less movements in the Cylinder Groove and a Sharper edge against the Head

If I use the Smaller side down, the Head has a Larger Sealing Surface. My first thought was to install them this way BUT a Sharper Edge does seal Better.

The Second Pic is the Large side up.

Remember, it's a fluid barrier, not a head gasket. If it's going to allow fluid past it, the fluid doesn't care if it goes over or under. Wide side down for me, FWIW.

Thank for the Instant reply. Somehow after reading one person saying large side up and a person asked why and got no good answer, then I Questioned it. I liked the idea that the Gasket stayed “Centered” with the large side down. Calling it a Fluid Barrier makes some sense also.

I saw a Post that you and I both posted on But for Different parts Of the Question. The guy had used the Base Gaskets for the Head Gaskets Which promptly had Blown out.

I had commented on the Air deflectors.

Mr. Walker, Again, I want to thank you for pointing me in the Right Direction for Head Studs.

My original thought was to get ARP. But today talking to an Aircooled Porsche shop owner, he told me about some customers demanding they use ARP and some times while torquing them they could hear them Crack.

As Always YOU ARE DA MAN!!

Jeff Alton 12-03-2022 03:38 PM

The "porsche mechanics" you spoke to heard ARP studs crack? Find a new mechanic to speak too....

Maybe I am misunderstanding the use of the word "crack"....

The sound of the stud when they broke / snapped. What he was getting at was the ones that broke were “Strong but too Brittle”.

I think of all Bolts as very strong springs. At Daytona one year I had a Mysterious oil leak at the Base of my Kawasaki engine. So I sprayed Arid Extra Dry around my engine and saw leaking at the Base gasket. I then realized the Cylinders were lifting at high RPM on the Banking. I installed larger stronger Studs and the problem disappeared. The Right Fastener for the Right application!!

Jeff Alton 12-04-2022 08:13 PM

Well..... ARP make a great fastener. The anecdotal comments from your "mechanic" make me question their thoughts when they "broke/snapped".

At any rate, continue on. If the fasteners and process you have currently in place yield good results, that is all that matters. Continue with that as it is working and yeilding good results.

Cheers

Agreed! On my Landspeed Motorcycle, the “Entire” Engine I replaced every case and head stud with ARP! Also on the Mini Cooper I had, threw away the Head bolts and replaced all with ARP Studs and had “ZERO” problem with these vehicles 👍🏾👍🏾
