Engine cut out at high RPM - coil?
I have an '86 Coupe, all stock. I'm getting an engine cut out at full throttle (similar to a rev-limiter) when at 5k+ RPM's.
I recently replaced plugs, new Clewett wires, Bosch rotor and cap. When I examined the coil at the time, ohms were slightly out of spec, plus it had a chip out of the ceramic port on the top of the coil. I suspect this could be the issue of the cut out, and since it is out of spec, want to replace. However, I'm seeing bad reviews of Bosch coils. Any recommendations on alternative coils? I'm seeing some using MSD high vibration used, but mostly on CDI/earlier cars. Would this work on a stock '86 3.2? Other ideas? I've seen some recommend cyl temp sensor replacement for a similar issue, as well as resonant vibration in the dizzy. Dizzy is certainly worn with ~108k on the clock. Looking to examine from easiest/cheapest to more expensive if this turns into a parts replacement quest. Of note, and as a related question, I replaced the old Bosch WR7DTC (three prong) plugs with NGK BPR6ES's, and seems to have a little less power. Recommendations? TIA!

do you have an msd box? the rpm limit resistors aren't very accurate

No, all stock ignition.

Any recommendations on non-Bosch coils for a Motronic? MSD 8222? Would the MSD 8222 require a different rotor than stock Bosch rotor (non-resistor?)

dunno the #'s but MSD makes coils that need to sit upright & coils that can mount in any orientation

Pail, Does your tach dance when the engine stumbles?

Well, I wouldn't say dance. It drops ~500 RPM for a 1/2 second before coming back. More of a jig.

have you used an ohm meter to test the coil, very easy!

The coil was used across all lines of Porsche in mid 80s.
The Porsche only junk yards should have a load of saleables Don’t buy the silver ones that are new..junk Bruce |

Yes, it was slightly out of spec, but only just. The issue only arose after replacing all other ignition components, and the thinking is that there might be more resistance in the Clewett wires, plug type which led to coil related arcing.

Pull the distributor cap and make sure the rotor advance mechanism is moving freely.
If not, it will cause errant spark at high rpm, since the DME is advancing the spark but the rotor is not keeping up, causing it to jump to the previous terminal.

Damn good advice. When I pulled the rotor, the shaft came out freely, and had to reseat the retaining c clip. The dizzy has needs.
