Gyrotuner.......oh-oh! Engine fired up, but I had to shut it down. It sounds like you have a collapsed tensioner on the 4,5,6 side .....and the leak-down test shows some potential issues......

regards,
al

A slight return

A brief update on the rebuilt 2.7S with older Megasquirt ECU.......this has turned into a bit of an exploratory surgery.......After installing the custom intake that came with this engine, I proceeded with a cold leak-down test, to get a baseline.....results were very mixed with some good and two very bad leakers...well, it had been sitting around for a couple of years, so I decided to fire it up and see if it would improve......fired it up and .....it sounded like ball bearings in a blender....shut it down fast....
It sounded like a tensioner had failed, so i checked the tensioners...very nice, new, tight chains and tensioners....hmmm. Next, check the rocker adjustments.....remember, this is a rebuilt engine. It should all be good,,,,,but, here's what was causing the racket.....

#5 intake and #4 & #5 exhaust rocker adjusters were completely backed off....with the nuts sitting at the end of the adjust screw...as if they were ready to be adjusted, but somehow missed before final assembly......

It's mo betta now and this time, the fire up didn't sound like total destruction waiting to happen...

leak-down

Another note regarding the 2.7S with custom intake.....this engine was reportedly rebuilt and then sat for 2 years or so......as shown above, it had some valve adjustment problems....and initial leak-down was very bad......after fixing the valve adjustments I decided to fire up the engine, do the initial tune and see if the leak-down would improve...sometimes, after sitting for an extended time, the carbon will harden and hold valves open ....and after heat cycling the engine, that eliminates that situation....and that is what happened here...........after a few days of running the engine until warm ....the leak-down shows significant improvements......

Still has one problem cylinder....but I suspect that #5 has rings that are not fully seated and may improve also, once run in the car for a while......

al
