Wiring loom options
I was looking at less costly alternatives to the purpose built early 911 looms and checked out the Painless Performance looms for the Corsair.
They offer a pro series without connectors and extra length on the wires with a range from 21 to 28 circuits for around $500. I would appreciate any opinions or alternatives. Thanks |

Pull out the schematics for your car and figure it all out.
Others have tried it. Some have succeeded with a complete re-work of the system. There were some posts here on Pelican. Do a search. Here’s one: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/522541-911-electrical-complete-re-wire-wiring-harness-info-advice.html

Thanks for the link , my thinking was that the Corsair loom would give me good starting point rather than starting from scratch.
I did re wire my Marcos sports car years ago which was made difficult as grounds had to be run as well ( wooden chassis) |

One thing to be aware is that the Germans seem to wire using the following plan:
power > switch > fuse > load. as opposed to most others which is: power > fuse > switch > load. This results in a totally different way of wiring that the pre made looms like painless do not address adequately unless you totally replace all the wiring. Also, this will mean that, most likely, any electrical issues in the future will need to be addressed by you or a mechanic that is willing to work with a non-factory setup (most are reluctant).

I am doing a total replacement so that shouldn't be an issue , thanks for pointing it out.
Yes it will not be to the factory codes but all the Painless wiring is clearly marked . |

In my experience, the factory made changes every year to at least one part of the harness. 1968 had the marker lights (fender warts) on North American cars, so two variations that year are possible. It is always best to contact the supplier and go over your requirements; have your VIN handy. Restoration Design in Canada makes these harnesses and has a European partner.

There are many versions, and (if originality matters) each one is different, 901 1964, 1965 (washerpump right), 1966 (fog lights included) and 1967, 1968 (separate foglight harness required) Furthermore there's a difference in pvc or tape (Zuffenhausen build) The 64-65 car's had the instrument lights wiring as a part of the chassis harness, all 65> cars had separate instrument light looms. (5 bulb for 3 gauge 912) en 7 bulb for the 5 gauge 911 and 912. Most 64 and 65 car's had yellow pvc terminal covers, later years in black. Many other looms (generator , front harness etc also came in different versions. We can deliver (almost) every version directly from stock. Have a look at www.kroonwireharnesses.com
