Rear Deck lid struts no spoiler
Changing '88 Carrera from deck lid with spoiler to classic deck lid. Spoiler and deck lid are removed as unit and installing new deck lid. The drivers side has two hydraulic struts and passenger side none. The pressure feels like way too much for the new light deck lid. Should I just try and remove one of the pairs or was there a light weight strut spec for the classic deck lid?

One works well. I'd try that first.

If your car has the front spoiler, you may notice that it can get a little squirrelly at highway speeds with the rear spoiler removed.
I’ve found that these cars work best with both spoilers installed, or both removed. |

Thanks all I will give one strut a try and then move on to the boom stick. Front spoiler may have to go too.

I've got front spoiler and none at the back and my car feels fine. I've driven it up to 235kmh and many times at 200kmh.

My car with standard decklid has two shocks. No issues with chin spoiler and no tail (other than the purists who say you can't have a chin without a tail) with my car at higher speeds (100+).

When I bought my '78 coupe, it had both front chin spoiler and a whale-tail. One strut, in back, was fine for years, but when it got tired I also added a second strut (one the other side). (Also, new struts up front. Boy was that fun.)
You see lots of SCs running a chin spoiler without any tail. I feel the rule was, don't run any tail without the front spoiler. If a tail is pushing down on the back, extra air can get under the front and make the steering lighter. I can't see how a chin spoiler is going to hurt steering, except for maybe aggravating sudden over-steer when breaking? |

I just can't do that. It is just one step above driving with a rag in the gas filler cap instead of replacing the cap.
I have a very nice 911 182,000 mile 911 that I drive regularly. Every single component or feature of the car works as designed, or much better. I just can't resort to a stick to hold up a deck lid or trunk lid. It just screams shoddy maintenance to me. The shocks are not that expensive, and not real hard to replace. For your car, do to it what you like. I will continue to replace the shocks and have a car that is not embarrassing if I open the engine compartment.

I’m a sucker for the simple solutions. The double shock contraption is overkill for the classic lid without the wing and with the AC deleted. Replacing them with new ones will result in the lid slamming open which is obviously undesirable. So what’s left is a trial and error process of replacing just one, maybe one new one old or perhaps removing one entirely, which in itself would seem violate that principle you espouse, wouldn't it ? Yeah, simplicity is better. I recall seeing a more customized prop than the broomstick I will add !
About the spoilers, my understanding is that it’s OK to have a chin spoiler without the rear wing but not the reverse. Last edited by pmax; 11-29-2021 at 12:26 PM.. |
