Restoring Oil System

Hello! Ever since buying this 84 Porsche Carrera 3.2 5 years ago, I’ve decided that every winter I start a restoration project. So this winter I decided I would restore the entire oil system. And of course as I move along with the project other parts seem to grab my attention that need restoration. Not surprised knowing the age of this Porsche. It definitely is a slippery slop. I’ve documented almost all of my restoration during my ownership. And it’s been extremely fun working of this awesome machine.
I will continue to post my progress as I move forward. Wish me luck!

Will have to follow this. Getting ready to remove the external oiling stuff from my 83SC and add the fender mounted cooler like you have over the "trombone" loop. The car has been sitting for several years so I'm going to have to flush all the lines, etc.

Apparently the beige that blends into the guards red is a factory Porsche stone guard.

I thought it was worn down paint that developed of the years.

What are your thoughts guys?

Making some progress while I wait for parts to arrive.
Loving the brass finish. Thermostat is up next for some cleaning/polishing

When you get to reassembly, be super careful to get the rubber hoses aligned dead square as the tiny fine threads are super easy to cross thread. I had a bear of the time getting the two short rubber hoses going to the front oil cooler back on and not cross threaded. I had to take the cooler back off to get the angle right, tighten them up to snug, and then remount the cooler and then tighten the fittings.

At first I had a slow seep of oil when the engine was running. I ended up cleaning the area, and tightened more, and then put on temporary "diapers" of a folded paper towel zipped tied into place. When I saw it was just one of the connections still seeping, the paper towel made it clear which one it was. I finally got it tight enough to not leak anymore. Then I removed the paper towels.

I presume you are replacing all the rubber hoses with new ones.

Porsche painted the brass tubes to protect them. Are you going to paint them before reassembly?

loooks good. I did this to my 930 when I rebuilt the motor.

rocker panels? probably not. but also depends on how the rest of the car looks.
you don't want the rockers looking better than the car
also color matching and originality if that matters.

me personally, when I was looking for my 930 I would rather have one with marginal original paint that a respray. but that's me.

I will definitely keep that in mind when it’s time to reassemble.

Yes replacing all the rubber hose and keeping the hard lines brass.

Thank you

They’re not copper, they’re brass ;-)
Nice job. I much prefer the raw brass. I did the same on my 930. Also, shelved my rockers

Not sure why I typed copper knowing very well it’s brass. Yes, I love the raw brass too. Puzzled on why Porsche would paint them black. I guess because of tarnishing.

Finished cleaning/polishing the oil thermostat. And some parts have arrived that I’ve prepped and are ready for installation.

So impressed with your disassembly! Doesn’t look like you had too much drama. Unlike my disassembly early in 2020. All ended well but your project looks awesome!

Appreciate your kind words. I will admit that I sent the oil cooler and oil tank up to Shaun at Tru 6 restoration. I had a difficult time getting the short hoses off the oil cooler.
But overall it’s been trouble free!

So unfortunately my project took a turn which I didn’t expect. After removing the rocker panels I discovered some bubbling from the lower part of the passenger fender. I removed the stone guard and there it was RUST. Man was I bummed. This really sucks. I’m in the process of removing the fender and having it repaired correctly with single stage painting process. Trying to keep it as original as possible since 95% of the Porsche is original paint. This rusted fender was repainted by the previous owner many years ago. At this point I’m really considering taking care of all the wheel wells with a light coat a paint. “Greasy Fingers style”

I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress
