Nice looking car Paul.

Try driving along a quiet street, put it in neutral, and turn the key off (DON'T put the steering lock on LOL ) and see if there is any gearbox noise.

If I understand correctly, the noise was observed when car is not moving and the noise is a consistent tempo not affected by engine speed. This doesn't make sense to me. Everything that is rotating is tied to the crankshaft speed (clutch, throw-out bearing, transmission input shaft, and all the gears rotating on the output shaft that don't have engaged sliders). I don't think it's the gearbox.

Does the 89 have any soleniod-driven emissions stuff mounted near the gearbox? EGR valve cycling?

With the engine running, it must be a pretty loud tap tap tapping in the gearbox.
Strange that its not rpm dependant, perhaps a raven?

If the noise is there when the wheels are not moving but the engine is running, presumably it’s not there when the engine is off. Is it there when the engine is ‘on’ but not turning? (before cranking starter)?

If it’s at idle with clutch in, then it’s not related to the rotating mass in the trans. It’s more likely then to be something else related to engine running and transmitting the noise into the trans case itself. Emissions equipment, fuel pump, exhaust rattle- it has to be something related to the engine spinning.

Thank you.

I never thought to try that, but will in a few weeks when snow is all gone.

when you say all original 180K..the clutch must have been done at least once they last around 80K...i wonder what clutch disc you have in it spring loaded or rubber type?

With fresh oil in the gearbox it now is very difficult to engage first and reverse when cold. Its not too bad when at normal operating temp.
