The Red Car, the build story of a 1971 911T.
For a guy who has owned countless VW's over the years, this will document my build of my first "real" Porsche. The car has been recently acquired and the project has commenced. Purchased as a rolling hulk, it is evident I will have to rely on the resourceful sourcing of Pelican Parts to bring it all together. As most know, Pelican Parts is a leading supplier of European parts and accessories. I have found that nearly every needed component is readily available from Pelican. So here the story goes... ![]() ![]() Every car has to start somewhere. I will respect the fact that everyone has their taste and opinion of what "looks good". So I will reserve my judgement for what the car's initial state was. My knowledge of the car's life to date is close to nil. There are several indicator though, that it was in fact a legitimate race car at some point. RSR Dual Master Cylinders, RSR Bilstein Coilovers, RSR Lightweight glass, RSR Carpeting, Rear Roll Cage, Window regulator deletes, with leather lift straps (Not sure of technical term for that configuration), and more. The one thing I am pleased to note is each corner of the car appears to be intact, without the evidence of a race incident. Having been exposed to a handful of 911s over the years, I can honestly say they have a special place in my heart. Much like my collection of GTIs (MK1, MK2-16V, MK7.5), they are a sure joy to drive. I look forward to making many memories in this car as it hits the streets in the Spring of 2022. It will feature RSR 11' Flares, RSR Front and Rear Bumper, and Ducktail adorned in Guards Red powered by a 2.4L MFI mated to a 901 Gear Box. Stay Tuned.

ENGINE AND GEARBOX MATING UPDATE
Pelican Parts Gold -featured, a small load of gold from Pelican parts to help revive this 51 year old dream maker. 2.4 MFI Engine resting patiently on the engine stand. Notable improvements include some blasted and powder coated fan, extensive zinc plating, new fuel lines, and other odds and ends. There is some uncertainty around this motor, as its been rebuilt at some point and never fired. Ports, pistons, and more are all fresh of a rebuilt...so the anticipation to learn if she fires is high. Some prayers to the Porsche Gods to ensure she comes alive and has a long life ahead. Rebuild 901 Gearbox, Lightened Flywheel, Sachs Pressure Plate and Clutch at the ready FORGED CHROMOLY FLYWHEEL- I have always loved a fast revving motor and the herkie-jerkie surging of a motor equipped with a lightweight flywheel. It ads to the character of a manual gearbox and I can't wait to become proficient at managing it with grace. CLUTCH PRESSURE PLATE - 225 mm Installed [/B] Part#: 911-116-001-05-M38 ![]() SACH CLUTCH INSTALLATIONPart#: 911-116-011-07-M38 ![]() Engine and Gearbox is ready for mating. ![]() Engine and Gear Box Mated - They're finally in their new home, one step close Admittedly, this project is undoubtedly overwhelming. I am sure that most of what I can refer to now as "my fellow classic Porsche owners" can relate. At this point, I have to place my perfectionism at bay and focus on the important things. Will the engine fire? Will the gearbox shift smoothly with fresh bushings, a precision Wevo shifter, and a little luck. The possibility of having a 911, let alone one that runs this Spring is only made possible by a dear friend, a very talented Porsche technician, Pelican parts, and more. Hope this format works, as I've not posted to forums in well over a decade. Open to suggestions for improvement should anyone have advice. Thanks for the read.

BONES- What we are working with
This car shares a similar folklore, "This car used to be an ex-race car"... with little known background beyond that. The rolling hulk from my assessment appears to be solid. The pan is solid and has some minor dents from ill informed people whom have attempted to jack in the wrong position, some very minor road rash, etc...but in general looks solid.
By no means am I a Porsche expert, but appears the previous owner was going for a RSR Front Bumper and 11" Rear Steel Flares, Whale Tale, RUFF Lightened Bumper with Rockers. With exception of the front bumper and flares, the rest must go. At this point, I am contemplating a Getty Rear '73 RSR Rear Bumper and Ducktail Classic for the rear, with removal of rockers. The rockers will need to be welded up with some light bodywork. Having been around paint in my career for 30 years, I know what it takes to seek the level I expect, so we be content with the car is. A respectable quality single stage refinish (Complete) featuring an assortment of defects. My ability to polish and correct paint will be detailed as the build progresses.

Hi Jeff,
Looks like a cool project! I see you are also in MN, maybe if we both get our cars running, our paths may cross. I’m in St Paul near the Maplewood corner. I’m a big fan of Griot’s products as well and I have a question about ordering liquid car car in the winter: will the products still be good if they freeze? I have been only ordering liquids during the summer, although honestly, I usually only use them in the summer as well. Best, Rutager

For best results and product stability, they should never be frozen. In our development process, one test that is always ran are multiple free-thaw cycles. We do add certain ingredients to improve stability in free-thaw scenarios. However some chemistry just does not hold up to it. For example water in oil emulsions which most waxes are comprised of will typically lose their ability to hold together adversely affecting their performance. While polishes (oil in water emulsions) can be shaken together and continue to perform well. Soaps, dressings and spray Detailer’s are usually resistant and fairly stable. It is one of the challenges I’d living in Cold climates. Please stay in touch. Would love to do a rally with a fellow enthusiast. Appreciate your reaching out |

Hi Jeff,
Appreciate the answer, I’ll make sure I stock up in the warmer months. Here’s my thread on my ITB conversion. Not quite to the point of good drivability, but it drives around the block. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1067600-2-7-x-faktory-pmo-efi-upgrade.html Take care, Rutager

Simple parts like this Oil Pressure Sending unit can transform the appearance of the engine and ensure consistent performance. This URO supplied part is close to OEM and looks fantastic

Welcome. Thanks for sharing the build. Looks like you got a solid car with some nice race bits. Especially the RSR glass. Super cool. I’m rooting for you on first start up. I’m guessing you’ll be fine.
Hopefully you can post a video. Good luck.

WHAT SHALL I RUN FOR SEATS
I have an opportunity to acquire these vintage Recaros. They were imported from Japan. They are in excellent condition overall with some fading in the fabric. For some reason, I fell in love with these seats and just feel they are meant to be. They fit like a glove. Additionally, I’ve acquired some factory Recaro 911 Mounts and Sliders to accompany them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The other option is new Recaro Classic LS seats. I’ve yet to explore their cost but am intrigued. Thoughts? Appreciate your input. Last edited by 2276spyder550; 02-25-2022 at 07:12 PM.. |

I love those seats. A lot. However, personally, I wouldn’t use them in a f body or a backdate.
Mid seventies to mid eighties though, the cats azz. That said, I’m powering my 77 backdate with a 3.3 turbo. So what do I know. Something like your MFI motor would be much more period appropriate. Carry on.

UPDATE! NEW FUCHS and Tires
Thanks to quality replicas by Braid, I am closer to the final vision for this car. 9" and 11" Braid Fuchs have been paired with TB15 Michelin Race Tires supplied by Coker Tire. The ride height has been set with corner balancing by Zero to Sixty. I think it is sitting perfect! ![]() The car is close to coming home. A lot has transpired....more updates to come

Thank you so much! The Michelins are sticky as molasses and will assuredly be chipping paint. I need to get my head right on that. Accustomed to maintaining perfect paint, so it is going to be an exercise

Those wheels completely transformed the car. Looks great! Agreed on the seats, which are very cool but better for an 80's look. I would go with a new version of the early 70's type. Think Singer style.

Great job.
Dig the Braids Ditch the seats. Too 80s for my taste. Corbeau or Cobra classic for budget seats |

Very nice project!
Have you tried searching for the VIN number to see if any history shows up?

How can someone search the VIN for history? I have a 79' with the shorter VIN and nothing comes up on Carfax and I've done a Google search but nothing really comes up.
