Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of driving my 914 to Rennsport in Monterey, CA from Tampa, FL and back with my dad. Hope to do a similar trip in the future. You are right about the 30 mpg and 87 octane being one of the best parts of the Type 4. The 914 fuel tank is a little bit smaller than the 911/2 but I usually need to stop to piss at a quarter tank anyways. Pretty easy to argue that the L-jet fuel injection is more advanced than the CIS used on the 911s of the same generation. Love to see these cars driven. A stark contrast to many of the cars being shown at this event.

I'm glad to share, thanks for following along!

Tampa to Monterey sounds like an awesome road trip, I've been mulling over the idea of a lap of the USA in the 912E and recent world events make it seem that much more urgent that I (WE) need to drive these things as much as we possibly can.

There is a speedster in the same condo parking lot as us, looked cool sitting there this evening in the dark.

Sunday after Concours we talk about our favorite cars of the trip over a couple beers and just relax. I packed the frunk, thought about the 600 miles back home and of course next year..... Werks Reunion/ Amelia 2023.

I think I may end up doing this, it's not a huge inconvenience necessarily changing the points/ gap/ timing but doing it repeatedly from these parts quality issues is annoying.

I've had similar issue with those also. I actually removed my set pertronix and went back to points before I went with a hunts magneto and just removed all those problems permanently. You could also just remove the whole distributor setup all together and go with a MAGNASPARK™ Crank Trigger Ignition System

Very cool setup with that magnaspark, I think pertronix may be in my future but I may just be trading one problem for another. Id still have to carry points/ condenser for a potential pertronix failure, lol.

I had a similar set up to what you have with the complete spare dizzy with points, so if the pertronix ever went bad I could just swap them out. Never had to do that in many thousands of miles. I ran into more problems with their flamethrower coils than the pertronix unit itself.

Ryan, How did you get from 'no spark on the side of the road' to your garage. You sorta skipped that part.

Were you carrying spare points ? If so congrats.

BTW the incidences of the failure associated with the new Flame Thrower II, and Ignitor II, Petronix units are overstated.

Unless you are building motors like loosenuts.

Sorry, ha! I guess I sorta glazed over that part.

I had a spare NOS Bosch points set in the glovebox, a quick swap, dwell and timing check and I was back on the road!

I'm the owner of the Silver 997 that was parked in front of you. I really dug your cargo rack!

Werks was fun this year, lots of interesting cars in the Corral and the Judged / Exhibit area. I'll look through my Point and Shoot camera pictures to see if I got any of your 912.

Glad you got back safe!

Very cool thread! Thanks for sharing!!

I saw these events and people posting about them on IG but it's cool to see someone do an entire road trip and take photos there also.

Great details and trip prep/troubleshooting.

I'll be tinkering with my 912E this weekend. Might have to ask you a few questions!

Thanks, I was thinking it would be a fun thread. I don't have any social media so I figured I'd share the trip on here in its entirety.

I'll PM you my cell if you need some troubleshooting advice!
