Child Seat / Baby Seat Carrera 3.2 G-Body

I've read through all the threads I could find on this but didn't see a current one and as any parent knows, the Baby/Child Seat game changes every year so I thought to see if anyone had some new info?

I have an '85 911 with lap belt only in the rear. I'm open to 3-point belt or other harness conversion but having hard time even starting with what seat is best starting point for fitment.

Daughter is currently 2 years old...

Any other new dads out there please holler, thanks.

My kids aren't the same age, but might as well drop this recent info here for others.

I have a 4 year old and 2 month old. Just this year got my 4 year old into the back of my 3.2. I used a mifold comfort booster seat. Not completely sold on it as it is intended to bring the seat belt down to the child, instead of boosting them up to the belt. In the back of our cars the belt buckle rides high on the transmission tunnel and so I feel the chest strap sits at a weird angle and in an accident he would not be secured.

Looking at the mifold hifold now which is more a traditional framed booster. Also ordering the bublebum inflatable booster. Most traditional boosters don't seem to fit in the seat properly. I tried a few from graco, peg, etc.

For your age child I saw the Pico portable car seat which my kid is at the top end of fitment, so I didn't bother.

I have a 1986 3.2 and was in the same dilemma. However I learned that either in 85 or 86 and later the three point seat belt retractor mounting holes were factory installed for either Sweden or Switzerland market (cannot recall exactly) that requiried 3 point belts. Indeed they are there. So I fabricated this tether bar for use with a child seat and will use the lap belt configuration with tether. Once the car is put together, after some other mods being done, I plan on going to buy buy baby and sampling various seats for fitment. More to come on that in the coming weeks.

Regarding crash worthiness, entire system is fabricated using 1/8 sq bar and 1/4 plate and class 10 bolts and nuts. It is heavy and stout.

Once my child is old enough for a booster with lap belt the 964 3 point seat belts I obtained will be installed. The holes currently in the parcel shelf have been cut to receive the belts and fascia ring. So it's a fully modular set up.

If one does not have the parcel shelf belt retactor factory fastening mounts I do not encourage using any set up where drilling holes and installing bolts in the BIW body parcel deck, unless proper reinforcement is provided.

I have a 6 and 8 year old and wanted them to be able to ride with me.

My car is a 77 with just provisions for lap belts.

I drilled through the parcel shelf though the metal, welded a 1/4” thick plate with a hole in it to the sheet metal in the engine bay and then mounted some 4-point Y harnesses from seatbelt planet:

https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/i-30498140-4-point-y-harness-lift-latch-buckle.html?ref=category:1389308

When I remove them I can plug the holes in the shelf with some vinyl covered plugs and it’ll be fine.

When tightened all the way my 8 year old is perfectly snug but my 6 year old still needs a booster. I’m using an inflatable one from BubbleBum as it’s narrow enough to fit the Porsche.

Then again, I’m only allowed to take them to school and back (4 blocks) until they can ride in the front seat according to mom

Similar to what others have said, the later models have mount points for installing a shoulder belt. I purchased a 964 rear three point belt and had it installed. My 9 year old fits perfectly with no booster, my 6 year old fits well with the bubble bum booster (which is a great fit for the rear seat).

My daughter is 2 1/2. I had a hard time finding info on what car seats are best. I ended up going with this Graco seat. It's a lot more narrow than standard seats from both the front and side profiles. It says true3fit LX on the bottom. My kid fits perfect in it. I do have an 88, and she rides in the front most of the time..but I have put this in the back of my 997 and my 88 and it works.

My kid is six. I think he’s safer in the back with a lap belt than trying to fit a seat back there. When he was younger I used to secure his car seat in the front.

I’m 3 deep most days in the 911. Kids are 8, 6, and 2. I retrofitted 3 point belts into the back seats.

amazing response from everyone.

i saw the Wayb Pico seat — very cool design. wasn’t sure if the flat bottom would work with the rear buckets being so small but maybe worth ordering (or returning) to see.

having a tether point would be very good peace of mind — that fabrication is not a bad idea. looking forward to seeing how seamless that will look completed.

graco is interesting too with the narrow base — are you saying you mostly mount this in the passenger seat rather than the rear? and do you run it forward-facing or rear-facing?

the recaro is nice —is that special order from europe? what's the model?

either way, it def looks like step one is 964 3-point harness conversion — i like that. is this part readily available? i hope i have that mounting hole in my '85.

thanks all!

Yes, I put my kid forward facing in the passenger all the time. It's really fun to have the kid right there next to you. I put her in the back in the 997 since there's an airbag.

I was never comfortable having a child seat or booster seat in the back. Could never get the seat to fit properly and I worried that they would hit their head on the window with the booster.
Always used the front seat. It was pretty cool for me and my daughter. Memories ....

Here is the part number from the parts I bought previously: 96480302101

I was unable to source a brand new set, so I settled on a slightly used set off of ebay.

For anyone who might be going this route..This sized carseat fits like an absolute glove in a Sparco EVO 2. I'll take a picture and upload it so you can see what I mean

I’ve been trying to figure this out all summer since my boy turned two. He’s dying for a ride in the ‘81 SC Targa. Today I just went to Target with a tape measure and found the Evenflo Sonus 65 fits perfectly. It’s about 11” wide all the way through the base and back and fits snugly all the way through the seat. My only problem is I need to replace my retracting belt with a fixed version to hold it in place - mine only tighten under braking so won’t hold the seat tight in normal circumstances. I’m very pleased with the seat, and only $120.

Love this thread …. though, my wife most certainly will not appreciate it at all. Our youngster is ~15 months, and is wildly intrigued by these cars - he is a bit scared of how loud they are. I think that I have another winter to think about how to put him in the P-car before I have to go on our “secret mission”.
