Hey Tom, I think the file is incomplete- there's just one flat triangle in the STL...

I think Thingiverse is having an issue, I can upload a good stl file, slices in Cura but when I download the same file from Thingiverse is does not work!

Check back tomorrow and I will try again.

That's a great oil funnel! You could sell those.

DIY 3D Printing Tools and Parts Thread

That’s fantastic!!!

What design program are you using and do you prefer a computer vs iPad/tablet for the work.

Only asking because I am in the ground floor of the 3D game. Just set up our new Bambu Labs CX1 and have just printed some test benchy so far. While at work, I sent a file remotely to the printer and can monitor via the internal camera. Looking for pointers for design programs to use and what folks prefer, computer vs tablet for those projects.

Hoping to learn the ropes so I can contribute to the thread. Bambu is currently running their 2nd anniversary sale and prices are reduced, fyi.

Can't speak for Tom but I would definitely work on a computer. CAD programs for tablets are very limited in number and capabilities and working without a mouse is miserable. There are many great choices when it comes to extremely capable softwares for PCs.

I’ve used both computer and tablet and at this point I prefer shapr 3D on my iPad Pro. The pencil and touch interface is so fluid and dynamic that modeling becomes intuitive- certainly less powerful than solid works but for small and simple parts some of the desktop software is overkill and needlessly complicates.

I am still pretty well a newbie, but have done a few projects now. I have a Bambu Carbon X-1 with AMS and love the thing, it's been fantastic.

Design I use Fusion 360, took me a full week to learn and make it do anything reasonable but after a couple of months and projects its now second nature pretty well and my confidence level is high that I can model anything I'll ever need.

You do blow through a fair amount of filament as the first projects seem to always have issues and I learned about ABS warping the hard way, but all in all - fun experience.

Bugs, tardy response, weather issues for the last few days.
I used Solidworks 2012 on a 2009 Dell Precision laptop. SW2012 still has more capacity that I know how to use. The computer is getting slow, looking to upgrade to A 2017 Dell Precision 7720. SW2012 needs Windows 7, the 7720 is supposed to be the last Dell laptop with Windows 7 compatible hardware. I run Cura on a newer Windows 11 laptop. Would love to have a newer version of SW but the cost is not worth it for what I am working on. Before retiring, I did get to sample several Beta versions of generative design softwares, would be interesting to have access to.

Nice multi color prints1

Thanks Tom,

Appreciate the feedback. Hope you guys are doing ok with all the weather patterns hitting the country.

I am finding that it’s not an easy choice. All I’m wanting to do is design usable things for our P-car projects and small items I might need for the experimental plane.

F360 is insanely expensive (imho) for just playing around and not used for commercial purposes. A coworker uses one exclusively on his iPad Pro, it’s not Fusion 360.

I guess it doesn’t help not knowing what I am even looking for..

But I am having some fun getting to learn the nuances of printing.

Fusion 360 has a free for use hobbyist license. All it really lacks is the CAM operations.

That good to know, thanks!!

I know I still need to look into if F360 can run on Mac products or exclusively on PC.

Amazing talent and products.
Has anyone made an adapter plate to mount early mirrors onto doors drilled for later, flag mirrors? It would be amazing to get an adapter that would mount like the later mirror bases and allow the early mirrors to bolt to it rather than having to drill new holes in the door.
