NOT Mahle oil filter
I always use Mahle OC-54 oil filters on my 3.2. For some reason I ended up with this "Original Performance" oil filter back in 2016 from out host. It's been kicking around in my parts bin since then and I'm wondering if I should use it or not. Does anyone have actual experience with this brand?

Curious what does the underneath look like, mahle has lots of holes, some others have left. And where it is made unfortunately does not instill any type of confidence.

Bottom side of the filter. So much stuff is made in China nowadays, it's hard to get away from it, but ya, that's my concern too. Just looking for some experience from other users here.

When it comes to important stuff like oil filters, if I don't recognize the brand, I don't use it

Mahle oc54 is made in austria, hopefully will continue to be.
Last week I went out of my way to the next hardware store to pick up non-made in China faucet shut off valves, paid twice the price for made in Canada. Was a good call. I would throw that filter in the garbage and feel relieved that I didn't make a silly judgement. |

It would be neat to cut it open just to see what's inside.

Do you know what "Chinesium" is? You don't want to find out.

The good thing about our air cooled dry sump systems is the filter sees very little pressure compared to a wet sump system. Oil is pushed at a low pressure through the filter into the tank.

My concern would be they have left small bits of manufacturing metal in it that in turn goes through the engine.

I received one two weeks ago from pel parts. It was still made in Austria. All else, I'd stick with the big names, usually their oversight keeps things in check when manufacturing goes to third world countries. |

Second on opening it up just for comparison.
The Mahle's well made complete with a "jack in a box" multi-spring contraption on a heavy duty plate, for a filter, not to mention the tough exterior shell. |

Is there any actual test data on Mahle filters? Or is their reputation just something that gets passed around? When I say test data I mean to the standard: ISO 4548-12.
I think it would be a worthwhile thing to do a comparison test of the various popular filters and see how they compare. You can't always trust the claims companies make of their products.

Yes, bought on Pelican but I don't know how I ended up selecting it (price maybe?). I was more interested in the caps than anything else. I got this order in 2016 and to this day I have only used the crush washers so far. The caps and filter are still sitting in my parts bin. The caps are for a new set of Euromeister wheels I bought back then; they're still sitting in boxes too
![]() I've used the OC54 every year since then bypassing this filter. Every year I look at it and wonder whether I should use it, so here I am reaching out to the community to see if anyone else has experience with it. I think I'll give it a pass; it's not worth the risk. I'll cut it open someday, but not today. Thanks all ![]() ![]()
