What parts do I need to change tie rods?

Hi everyone. I’m a novice so please bear with me. I need to change my tie rods because of a steering wheel shake. Other than new tie rods, what do I need/have to replace when I take everything apart to do the change? Thanks in advance

Sounds like a wheel may be out of balance. What condition and age are your tires?

Our 911s are VERY sensitive to wheel balancing. If they did not do a road force balance, it is really hard to eliminate the shake. I went through several places to finally find a good place to do a road force balancing.

Same here. The second alignment shop I used had to remove the tire from the wheel and rotate it some for it to balance correctly.

Why do you think you need to replace the tie rods?

It's unlikely that new tires have caused worn out steering parts to suddenly manifest themselves in steering wheel shake. But that doesn't mean you don't actually have worn out parts.

This is a good vid on the process involved in replacing tie rod assemblies with typ 930 parts. If you want to replace ball joints, see the front a-arm video.

I didn’t check the tie rods tbh. On my drive home I called the mechanic and told him that the wheel is shaking above 70mph and he said that the balance is good so it must be the tie rods.

There was a shake but I know it’s because my old tires were flat spotted. Which means you’re most probably right, it’s not the tie rods. Thank you

I just called the mechanic and we’re taking the tires off to see if the front wheels are bent.

Tires aren't perfect.... the new tires could possibly be out of round.
Back when I worked at a shop in college, they used a tire truing machine to make tires round when needed. For an out of round tire, no amount of balancing would cure it until we put it on the tire truing machine and cut off the high spots.
They don't seem to do that anymore.... just throw away the new tire and put another one... Nevertheless, it's still possible to get a tire (or more than one) that's out of round. More than one out of round: they'll synch up with each other to cause some baffling shaking at certain speeds.

^^ This. If you go around a long turn at highway speed, and the wheel shakes in some of the turn and then goes away, I guarantee you have tires out of balance or out of round. The tire imbalance or out-of-round are going in and out of phase with each other.

Damn I came to say that I noticed this this morning. The car shakes like crazy and when I take a long highway speed turn it goes away then it comes back after driving straight for a few seconds. I’ll return the tires. Thank you.

Make sure the wheels are true too.
