Filling in 930 vented quarter panels

Hello.

My car came with a slant nose conversion that was done really well but I'd rather restore it closer to original.

I personally do not like the rear duct vents since they provide no purpose for my application.

Has anyone ben able to fill in the vents to make the fender smooth again?

Or is it easier to replace the entire quarter panel?

I’m about 75% done on the work to shape and fill mine in on my 82 euro 930 coupe. I didn’t want to remove the flare and replace it cause it’s original to the car (not the vent they cut in of course). With that I am learning is that it would have been much more straightforward to just replace the flares..

Any idea where your extended tail was made? I have the identical one and have no idea if it’s origins. Most are a full deck lid whereas this bolts to the stock 930 decklid like a tea tray

Would you mind sharing some pictures? It'd be great to see the process to tackle something like this.

I do not know when the whale tail was made. It has the Porsche symbol engraved in the rubber, which makes me think it's an OEM part. I have a feeling the deck lid is original to the car and they just slapped the extension on top of it.

It's a shame but at least it was cheap to buy

If the car is a 930 targa, then I agree to the restoration. If its a normally aspirated one, rather keep it as is. There's more than enough original cars out there. This one stands out and looks nice with the wide body.

I had mine filled - they cut out & re-welded in the metal "panel" (not the whole 1/4) but the open vent area with same gauge metal, it was "ALOT" of work (if I had to do it again I'd keep them if the model is insignificant). I sorta' agree with kev01, it looks kinda bad ass with those wheels, & depending on the slant nose fenders & lights (hopefuilly they're pretty normal 505 looking) I'd probably get a normal factory turbo tail & do the Targa bar in satin to match the period options, or go full DP (but that's a whole other ordeal)....

I like it the way it is.
Why not sell the car and buy what you want?

I would but this has been a long time project for me. It has a ROWDY rebuilt 2.4 MFI that screams.

I guess it has sentimental value since it’s what made me love the brand as much as I do.
I already started collecting parts to bring it back to period correct.

Then keep it as-is, and buy a second 911 that looks like you want. That would be cheaper.

Thought I’d throw an update on this.
Decided to start correct dating my car. I will say that it absolutely would’ve NOT been cheaper to just buy a new car. Got all the parts second hand and I’ve learned quite a bit in fabrication and body work. So no “regrets”
I’ve actually made money selling all the 930 stuff.

So far it wasnt too bad… Just forming the metal with a torch and a hammer being careful to not heat it up too much to brittle it. Took me about a day to do one side. I’ll prolly make a build thread to show how I got here.

I've never liked vented quarter panels either. They take away from that beautiful fender flare of the 930. The slant nose destroys the other beautiful part, the frog lights.

Any car with pop up headlights is irreparably ruined, in spite of what positive assets it might possess otherwise. The side vents couldn't have been more tacky. Miami/LA. On the 965S and 993 tt S, I think they had a small faired in scoop on the rear flair which I kind of liked. It didn't shout at you but was very subtle, just blended in. A company called BB, or Buchman brothers back in the late 70s grafted a 928 front to a 911 turbo rear and I think they had configured the headlights to work in the down position. No popup and I remember at the time thinking how cool

Thanks all. Yes I’m going hardtop. The car is so far from original that it’s the perfect platform to build what I want. Going for a wide 911R with the side oil filler since it’s a ‘72 and a lightweight roof. Doing the center fuel fill as well.

Did the other side yesterday. Will finish the body work sometime this week. I have no experience with metal work and welding so I’m just learning as I go. Which is also why I’m not worried about “perfection”

By the title, are you saying those vents and fenders are factory pieces, not original to the car of course but OEM parts nonetheless ?

The 930 quarters are OEM parts, so I’m keeping them for the width just without the vents as posted above.
Not sure about the fenders. The front/rear bumper were from AIR.

Can you tell me what welder you used? I have a small patch to do and wonder if I should buy one.

Eastwood MIG 90 with 75/25 gas. Runs on 110 and it's super easy to use and welds up to 11 GA steel

I think thats the same one I have, or at least mines also an Eastwood MIG that runs on 110. Great little welder that did some remarkable rust repair welding on my old Alfa.

Love the progress on this, curious what you're using to make it a hardtop?
