Hey, neighbor! I’m in MTP also.

Good to know about the machine shop. I’ve also heard Simmons in West Ashley is good for head work.

If you ever need a hand, let me know.

Chucksmith, paint was done by a guy down here - Absolute Auto Services. Small shop, but he did a good job. I did the reassembly.

So I’ve been slack in posting updates on my build. Just to bring everyone up to speed, I finished my motor. Fitted 3.1L P&C, 964 cams, hydraulic tensioner upgrade, had my WUR and FD rebuilt by Tony, backdated the heat and added SSI heat exchangers and a Dansk Sport muffler, new Sachs power clutch and replaced the flywheel. I’m sure there’s more, but those are the highlights.

I reinstalled the motor today so after a year and a half, I’m getting close to the finish line. Hopefully I can get everything reconnected this week and start it up for the first time this coming weekend to run in the cams. Can’t wait to get behind the wheel!!

Nicely done, looking great! Did you rebuild any of the injection system?

Yes, went through the entire CIS and tested each component and replaced/rebuilt anything out of spec. Replaced all the rubber hoses, had the WuR and FD rebuilt, new airbox, new injectors and seals. Given how many years the car sat before I got it, I didn’t want to be chasing vacuum and air leaks after all this work. I also replaced the fuel lines (thanks to Len Cummings).

That is looking really great! Did you go with Cerakote for the exterior black trim?

Great project and wonderful looking results. Were the interior components in that good of shape, or did you replace certain items? It's impressive overall. Sounds very well thought out on the direction you took with the 3.1. Best of luck on start up! Patrick

Thanks Dru. No, the trim around the windows still looked good, although I did replace the pieces that goes under the rear Targa window with new. The finish was pretty worn on the old ones, and I decided it was just as easy to replace those with the updated versions that have a little tab for a screw just inside the door jamb so that corner does catch on something and get pulled up. (I've did save the originals just in case). I had the painter strip and repaint the targa bar cover in a black satin.

Thanks ToySnakePMC! Appreciate the compliments. No, that interior is 100% original. It was filthy when I got it so it took a LOT of work to get everything cleaned and several months of treating the leather to get it to soften up. I started out using Leatherique and that got all the leather clean, but the front seat leather was still hard so I started applying Obenhauf's Leather Oil and boy did it make a difference. After a few applications of Obenhauf's and some time in the sun, the seat leather really started to soften up and become supple again. Plus it smells great.

Not yet. Going to try and start it for the first time tomorrow. I’ve been finishing hooking everything up, double checking my work, new oil, etc today. I’ll send you a pm with my phone number if you want to link up sometime.

Let’s just say it I felt like the car has been fighting me at every turn. Long story short, I had a really hard time getting it started and after a lot of trouble shooting, including smoke testing, pressure testing, confirming good spark, etc, got it to fire up but something was still off. After lots of reading threads and consulting with Tony who rebuilt my WUR and FD, I figured out I had a fuel flow issue. So drained the gas and low and behold, there was crud in the bottom of the swirl pot and under the tank screeen lip where the feed line exits. I had already looked inside the tank months ago when I replaced the sending unit and it looked clean but never thought about the swirl pot holding debris. After blowing carb cleaner through the return and feed line and cleaning that area out, put it back together and now it’s starting and running. I still need to dial it in a little better and am installing an AEM wideband AFR gauge to monitor my fuel mixture. I also need figure out what is causing my accelerator pedal not to fully return. It’s like it is binding somewhere and doesn’t come all the way back up but if I tap it to “blip” the gas, it releases. After all of that I’ll be on the road for some engine break in!

Consider installing a 2-sensor AFR meter. I installed the AEM singe sensor, and wish I had sprung the extra bucks for a 2-sensor unit.
