orientation of sump plate 1972 2.4

Which direction is the oil drain plug on the sump plate of a 1972 911? Please don't guess or tell me which way a different year is . . just for this car.

If you have the sump plate off, The drain hole should
be opposite of the pump pick-up (scavenge) tube.

There is a dimple in the sheet metal portion of the screen. The drain plug lines up with the dimple.

Shamelessly stolen from the Bring A Trailer web site.

It only goes together one way without a BFH.

The sump screen goes on so the oil pick up tube inserts into the hole in the screen. The steel cover goes on so the drain plug screws up into the relief "dimple" in the sump screen. Just to be sure, insert the drain plug into the sump plate finger tight before you attach it. Then you will see why the "dimple."

Guys, the screen with the dimple was not original to the early cars. Porsche developed that screen during the 1980's due to oil scavenge issues in the SCs. That screen looks like this:

Drain plug would be on the drivers side.

The 1972 would have originally come with a screen that looks like this. No dimple, so there is more flexibility in mounting the sump plate. I think the drain plug is usually positioned along the center line towards the rear of the car, but it could be on the drivers side as well.

So it really depends on whether the oil screen has been updated to the later style.

if you look at the user manual the sump plate has the drain plug toward the rear of the engine in the midline, but i agree that placing it as suggested is the way to guarantee better oil flow
