Slow transmission oil leak - Crack it open?
I dropped my engine a few months ago and nearly have it rebuilt. When it was out, I initially put the transmission on its back end in the garage, and found a small puddle there when I looked a week later.
I've since moved it to the normal horizontal position and it leaks more slowly. Still, over the past two months it has slowly been leaking Kendall onto a piece of cardboard underneath it. It is hard to estimate exactly how fast, maybe a tablespoon a week. I'm planning to wash it down carefully this weekend and get a better scope of the rate of the leak. But I'm wondering if I need to do more than refill it. I rebuilt the transmission in 2017, and haven't opened it in the 8 years since.

Is it leaking out of the main shaft seal? Other more inclined mechanics will chime in, but if it can be replaced without opening the tranny, do it.

My G50 has a vent on top. If you've flipped it over perhaps it's leaking out of a vent on what I assume is a 915?

Power washed it extra-clean on Sunday, placed on fresh cardboard for 3 days. Looks like the leak is coming from that seal on the nose. Pretty slowly at least.

That's the shift shaft seal. Easy to replace with the transmission out.

Thank goodness, I really didn't want to have to open that up again.

It's a different transmission, but the tool they recommend will help and the overall process is the same.

That explains it so well! Now I just need to get a parts list from the rebuild to get this seal in there too.
