Smile successful G50 work

Just replaced my shift bushings and O-rings last month..the rear bushings were fine! Now she's a new shifter COMPLETELY...no more clunks!!! quite tight (stiff, a bit,..but settling in quite nicely)...shouldn't have to go back in there for a while.

Best,

thanks

the wevo g-50 shifter and wevo PSJ have been installed. no longer does 5th gear seem out in right field. no longer do i have 5th to 2nd shift grinds.

entire new feel to the car. best example is putting your hand on a high dollar custom .45 and pulling the slide back for the first time in comparison to an outta the box basic G.I. grunt model .45.

wayyyyyyy shorter shift throw and precision positive shifting. well worth the money. this may be biased since my oem shifter was trashed internally and needed everything under the sun to revive back to stock.

and the coolest thing about spending these hard earned bucks unlike other bucks thrown at car.................YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT AND FEEL IT EVERY DAY!

this was well worth it. very happy with the change. wevo makes some damn good products. hooked up with their motor mounts and patrick motos tranny mounts the shifting cant get any better!

wevo now offers a taller shift knob, probably going to order one here. im 6"3" and this will be the ticket to even smoother shifts.

I plan on doing the G50 bushing repair this weekend.

Can someone explain the 5 mm adjustment of the base of the shifter?

Hey Dave,

The new kit actually comes with a nifty tool that is 5mm wide and makes the install super easy.

https://www.jwestengineering.com/G50-Bushing-Kit_p_26.html

The instructions show how to use this tool to get it all setup.

https://www.jwestengineering.com/assets/images/Instructions/G50_bushing_install.pdf

I had to do it with a thick screwdriver that was approx 5mm to get the spacing right.

I show the tool, and the adjustment, in action in this thread...

Sometimes this clunk can happen when you start to move the shift lever ever so slightly to the next gear before the clutch has actually disengaged the power output to the transmission. So Dean's advice of bleeding the clutch is a good place to start.

You'll need a long length of clear hose and a little bit of patience getting the bleeding set up properly. I like to put a box end 8mm (or is it 7mm? Can't remember) on the bleeder screw first, then stick the hose on there. Don't open the bleed screw too much or you'll have brake fluid running down the side of the trans. Bleed screw leaks at the threads quite easily if you loosen the screw too much. Finally, a pressure bleeder is a very smart move for bleeding the clutch system. Manual bleeding doesn't work well. I've done it and it just doesn't work well on the 911.

BTW, the shift coupler on the G50 tail shaft is different than the 915 trans. There's pretty much zero adjustment back there. The coupler is a pair of flanges riveted together with a rubber pad in between acting as a damper. No adjusting allowable with rivets.

Do what Keith said and check out the shifter assembly. There's a hard rubber/plastic ball cup in there that wears out.

It's #10 in the picture. #2 sometimes wears out too. There was an article in Excellence, maybe a year ago, that detailed how to service the G50 shifter. I'll try to scan it when I get a chance.
I upgraded this shifter bushing and cup not long ago but didn't quite adjust the housing correctly leading to slippage of 3rd gear. I went out today to adjust that and upon the test driver the entire shifter went limp while in 4th gear. Made it home only to discover that that piece behind the coupler (16b in the diagram) had shorn off where it connects to the transmission. I believe it is part 950 424 2193R but not exactly sure what it's called or where to find a replacement. Would appreciate any help.

G50 shift coupler shorn off?! Whoa. That's a hell of a failure mode. Got pics?

I may have a spare, with JWest coupler installed.
