Advise me the inexperienced on "redline" technicals.....early 911
I'm not that experienced with the understanding of the "redline". The redline on my tach is 7000. Is this something I should:
1. Stay below at all times? 2. Unsafe at certain gears? 3. What is the max, speed per gear (5 speed here), that I should have on my 911 E for each gear? 4. And is there an ideal shift speed through each of the gears, or is this a function of RPMs? Thanks.

1 yes please do not go above.
2 revvs is revvs. doesn't matter what gear you make em in for the engine.. 3 dunno 4 you want to keep your engine in the best part of it's power/torque curve for sporty driving but that usually is something you feel while driving... you could go all scientifical about it and have the car tested on a dyno to know what your cars curve is since it's probably not the same curve as when it left the factory.. but i'de say that's a bit over the top...

NEVER go over redline.....and if you are driving the original engine, it might be a good idea to be conservative.
And be careful downshifting, if you aren't at the right revs in the higher gear you can drive the engine over redline mechanically, which is just as bad as doing it with the throttle! And don't miss the 3-4 shift by going 3-2...Ooops! $$$$

Not 'warning', not 'danger' mark-- kaputt mark.

If you have a motronic 3.2, you will never see the "red line" unless you, or someone else has altered it beyond specs. Can't really answer for you though, a lot of people state their car year, but not the engine. I usually figure if it is 20 yrs old it might have the same plant.
