Does anyone have their own experiences with 0-60 times in the 911?

Adam 11-23-2004 03:45 PM

My '76 does 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, according to my G-Tech.

The '89 Cab seems a lot slower, even if it isn't.

Weaver 11-23-2004 03:51 PM

With my G-tech pro ( I know I know, is really not that great of a unit. I got it for $50 ) I had three runs of 6.1, 5.8, and 5.7. I really didn't kill the clutch at launch, but I also did not shift into third. This was at night, about 60 degrees out with the engine oil at about 210. 80K miles, no mods.

I just installed a cat bypass and a SteveW chip. Not expecting much lower times, but the car feels fantastic! After a valve adj. and new cap, rotor and plug wires, I will retest it come spring time.

Rest asured, I really don't care about launching off the line or fast drag times. I maybe do this sort of thing every two years. If a mustang or camaro want to race from a light, I let them go, then out brake the balls off of them.

I didnt think these cars were built to be that quick from a dead stop, First gear is really too tall,,, I could be wrong? I really like the 60 to 120 time!

Not to instigate abuse of your beautiful car, but I would say 6.4 0-60 is quite conservative. I never trusted the G-techs in lieu of a good ol' fashioned stop watch. Be that as it may, Adam, I'm sure your car could break the six-second barrier, especially with the S engine.

A fellow Pelicanite down south in Alabama gave me good advice about 0-60 tests with the 915 transmissions with 7.31 r/p(s):

You shift from 1st to 2nd at a very low RPM, bringing the car to almost a crawl; then you stomp on it up to 60 mph. The 915 7.31 will reach 60 in second gear, but you're almost at redline in most cases. I think high RPM shifts from 1st to 2nd with the 915 and 7.31 ring and pinion is like shaking a bottle of nitro.

From Paul Frere 911 Story book:

Max speed 157.7 mph
0-100 km/h (62.5 mph) 5.8 sec
0-160 km/h (99.5 mph) 13.9 sec
standing start km 25.6 sec

don't want to sound like a broken record, but if you have a healthy engine, good clutch, and remove a few hundred lbs + chip + bursch, you can get it down to the 5.4 -> 5.5 area consistently.
The 6.2 given in the book is at half load capacity. That's 350 lbs more than I have in my car when I'm by myself (I have a fair amount of weight loss on the car as well). This makes a big difference.

Also, the chip is for the 84 to 86 models. Once Porsche got their 3.2s up to 217 stock, I assume they did that with the DME settings because no other changes were made (went from 200 to 217).

It's very easy for people to refute any one additional component as having reduced their acceleration times: muffler, cat bypass, chip, or weightloss. It takes them all, and each one adds a little.

Also, I dispute the idea that these rear engined cars are poor for drag racing. They are only poor if you have more horsepower than you can keep to the ground under whatever conditions you choose to launch the car--then they get nasty with the hopping they do. However, if you have it properly proportioned, you don't burn rubber, you move, and very quickly.

I had some guy in a new tiburian or something (fully riced) with his girlfriend some weeks ago accost me in the 964. Don't accelerate past me acting like billy bad@ss with your girlfriend to a red light unless you want me to show you who's the man of the house. I really only needed some fuses from Kragen's.

Anyway, when the light turned, it was hasta. I could hear the screeching of his front wheels, pretty mean screeching I might add, from behind as he thrust it into 2nd. Without any drama, screeching, or burnt rubber, the ancient 911 was gone and he had no shot to catch up.

Two things about the 1984 C&D test....
1.) With what they wrung out of the car, it was the fastest available 1984 car in the US...beating Ferrari's and such. Besides the low 5 second 0-60, that car did the quarter mile in 13.9 @ 100 mph. Not too shabby.
2.) Car was later said to be a "ringer"....a Euro spec car posing as a US-spec car ! Maybe our own Stephen Wilkinson can comment!

Will

The 13.9 for the quarter mile with exit speed of 100mph is comparable to the 0-160 km/h Frere cites in his book (@13.9). Would confirm that a Euro spec car could easily pull 5.4.
I'd say when new the Carreras could do anything between 5.4 and 6.

speeder 11-24-2004 07:12 AM

Official factory 0-60 time was 6.1 seconds w/ 149 mph top speed. The 1984 C&D car was a famous "ringer", but it did its job @ 13.99/101 mph in the 1/4 mile. ;)

dd74 11-24-2004 08:54 AM

It seems C&D is always getting ringers: along with the beforementioned Carrera, they also received a Buick Grand National (remember those?) that recorded 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. Turns out it was a regular Grand National with a 330 horsepower GNX engine inside it.

TRE Cup 11-24-2004 08:58 AM

ok- so if we say the stock 3.2 goes 0-60 in 5.8-6.1, what do you think a lighter 73 911 , with oe 7:31 r/p, would do if equipped with a stock 3.2? any real world experience out there?

Wil Ferch 11-24-2004 09:20 AM

The 7:31 gear set might actually hurt...if there is an "extra" shift involved to get to 60...otherwise, it would help acceleration.

I'll go out on a limb and predict around very low 5's... 5.1-5.2.

Road Test magazine for a '74 Carrera RS 3.0 @ 2350# (230 bhp compared to the 231 bhp for a Carrera 3.2) was 4.9 sec. 0-60.

Seems about right for the light weight 3.2s around.

confused 11-24-2004 11:08 AM

What do you guys think my 914 will run when I get the my 3.2 engine in it? I am hoping for something in the high 4 sec area.

914 weight is under 2300lbs (I think). With a 901 transmission- 7:31 R&P, GA second gear (I think I want a C or a D 1st gear).

Engine is a 86 Euro engine, headers, sport muffler, probably a cone air filter and possibly a chip. I'm shooting for an eventual 250hp or 19hp over stock.

Any guesses? suggestions?

TRE Cup 11-24-2004 01:13 PM

914's are tough due to the shift pattern: 1st to 2nd is not the best when it comes to full blast off runs. i've got about 260 hp thru the mufflers in my 6 and won't do hard 0-60 runs- i like my gear box. my gearing is 11:31 1st// 20:32 2nd// 23:28 3rd// 27:25 4th// and 29:22 5th- good for 165 mph at 7500- It will do it too!

0-62.5 or 5.8 puts the 0-60 at about 5.6. Mid fives sounds about right. People who think the 3.2L cars are slow off of the line don't know how to get off of the line (and I'm certainly no expert test driver) or they have a car with problems.

confused 11-24-2004 05:51 PM

So TRE you have a transmission with A-HA-O-V-ZD and can turn 7500rpm. You must have a short stroke engine? How did you get a HA 2nd? Since the 3.0 and 3.2 use less RPM I am thinking a taller 1st would be nice, although not used much (and it is the weakest gear). There are the aftermarket C (15:36) and D (16:35) gears for the 901. Not sure if I want to spend $575 on a 1st gear. TRE- do you have a limited slip? Are they recomended for a street car? My current gears are A-GA-O-V-ZD all in a 914-6 transmission. I need the ZD to get to those high speeds.

The 914 shifter in stock form is a bit difficult. I was thinking about fixing that by using a 915 shifter with a bolt on gate kit. The bottom of the shift leve will have to be modified to use the side shifter linkage. That might work.

Joehand1 11-24-2004 07:20 PM

Really? Will my car max out at 157.7MPH? (8 mph above factory specs.)

If you think about it, a stock car capable of 0-60 in mid 5s, top end at 158 for a 17-20 year old car is remarkable.

Very few cars even now are anywhere near that fast.
