Anyone have an idea of 1/4 mile or 0-60 for a '73 911E completely stripped with a 3.2 built to 3.4L w/ intake, exhaust, chip, mild cams.
Seems to move pretty good, but I've never took it to the track or timed it. Just looking for some numbers for bench racing thrills.

I've been considering a 60s-70s 911 for some time, but as I've done more homework I started looking at SCs and 3.2s. The more I look, the more I like. Scroll down to the answer to question 7 from the FAQ. I was really impressed with how the 3.2 compared to other non-turbo models. I know not to take the numbers too seriously, and I've read about the abuse it may take to get these numbers, but the 3.2 looks like an excellent deal, if not the best, for the money in terms of base model stock performance (all things being equal). I'm now very interested in an 86-89 Carrera relative to others (there are a number of other factors that go into this that indicate the Carrera will meet my wants). Can anyone comment on the relative stats in the FAQ?

This thread is soooo old. Really do not over research parameters and numbers or what people write about the cars. I have owned over 100 911 cars (I am a dealer), don't get you panties in a bunch over whether you should get what model or what year and who really gives a hoot over a G-50 (its not that much better).

You will be safe buying any 78-89 911, ANY ONE OF THEM. Condition is more important than year.

Oh and not matter what anyone says the 65-73 cares have much more soul than the later ones. Thats why they are worth so much now.

Hi
can we talk about this 12 years later?
my 84 Cab is pretty quick
but, i find the shifting between 1-2 and so on to be pretty slow. i don't want to bag on my baby
What RPM would i bring it to at a stand still before i dump it and try to impress my lady ? lol

ant7 06-09-2025 12:55 AM

I think from memory, to get the best 0-60 tests for the 3.2 in the top UK mags at the time; they were performed in second gear, not from 1st to 2nd, happy to be proven wrong.
To be honest though; I wouldn't just dump the clutch to impress anyone, these old cars are tough, but why risk it ???

Back in 1984 when the 3.2 Carrera was introduced, all the car magazines tested them. 5.5 was the accepted average when abused more than any owner would do to the car.

The 3.2 Carrera was proclaimed "The fastest production car sold new in North America" with the whopping 200 HP. It had the fastest 0-60, 1/4 mile time, and top speed. The Corvettes were an embarrassment to any American in the mid 80s. In 1985 the 911 Turbo was returned to the USA, and of course it obliterated the speed tests of the 3.2 and every other car sold in the USA.

Porsche's numbers in the owners manuals and press releases were always conservative numbers. Mostly for the reason any normal driver should be able to match the speed numbers, and Porsche could avoid any lawsuits from an owner that could not match the published times.

:)
Of course here in the UK, our version of the Carrera 3.2 came standard with around 230BHP.
These little cars can still impress, even by today's standards!

Agreed , but keep an eye out for the soccer mom with her minivan who will blow by you !!
Todays reality , our 911's are slow cars that love to go fast..

True :D
I had a guy sat next to me in a transit van at the lights on a local dual carriage way one day, he looked over and grinned, lights changed, he floored it as I knew he would, I let him go, caught up with him a little further down the road, pulled along side him, we both smiled, and I went on my merry way, a bit quick! ;)

5-6 seconds at best. But these cars are not built for 0-60 nor 1/4 mile times! They are built for track laps at speed. I don't recommend clutch dump take off in these cars unless you want to really punish 1st gear, not a great idea to punish 1st gear in the 915 trans.

Here's what Peter Z has to say about 1st gear.

Let's just not forget. These cars are special for what they are.............when at speed the sounds, and looks cannot be matched anywhere/anyhow

So for the 5.4 sec 0-60 times, punch 1st to redline then 2nd ... on the 915.

Bill Douglas 06-11-2025 11:52 PM

The drag car racers, and the boy racers, will tell you to do a (drop the clutch) fast start you need something slippery - but not toooo slippery on the track surface. So the wheels will spin and the car accelerate quickly but not get full grip too soon or the engine will bog down.

So these guys with the 5.4 seconds etc had got it just right.

I have an early 915 with a 7:31 in it that makes my lightened but still porky M491 very quick. Weight loss and gearing are the two best ways to quicken your car IMHO.

I'm sure the Euro & ROW models had the lowest numbers posted & created that fast(est) image ie. higher output, usually no A/C, cloth interiors & some without power windows & sunroof, but our North American models were literally the overweight slower ones, heck the CA air pump on SC's almost killed their ability to be respectful, not sure if the '84 & up had any such emission devices that did the same. Porsche was always known for their conservative #'s & pretty sure my '84 Lotus Esprit (that EVERY magazine brutalized to death - clutch destruction) back in the day was just as respectable, it feels WAY significantly faster than the 9911 & my 308 & even 328

i think they are not slow if you drive them in the upper rpm's like they were meant to?
most modern cars are long legged for sure but these little 911's are still as quick as a new WRX or GTI and the likes..
at least i think so? lol

Nick Triesch 06-19-2025 09:57 PM

I have an 85 3.2 and I can tell you it’s almost as fast as a 2019 Subaru wagon with 4 softball players and a golden retriever.
