I just completed the repair on mine and it was a piece of cake. I ordered my gear and a bunch of other good stuff from our host and it arrived super fast. Now I have a working odometer again and I added electroluminescent lighting to all my gauges while I was at it. The improvement in visibility of the gauges at night with the new lighting is fantastic! Thanks to everyone that's contributed tips to this thread.

Gear arrived today, installed and tested okay. Thanks to everyone for their posts. Using the twisting method for needle removal and install was EASY! Hardest part was getting it all back together in the case without the circuit board and rubber feet falling off - took some finess, cursing and soldering.

If my speedo isn´t working, but the odometer is, is the problem with the broken gear?

Great instructions btw.

Jaskas,
That is another problem. There are a few posts on problems with the electronic speedometers. I just repaired mine. The gear will most likely need replacement also.

Just another thumbs up for the original poster. I used this post to replace the odometer gear on my '82SC with no problems at all. I did use slightly shorter screws when re-attaching the faceplate portion, that made re-assembly a lot easier. Got the gear from our host!

Core repository?

I don't know if this is the place to ask - or if anyone here would know - but is there someone that collects the 'cores' of things like gauges, headlights, etc? I am replacing a gauge - but feel bad throwing away the old one, and would love to just send it to someone, if there is someone who reconditions them.

With the Allante we always send in our cores for things - there are so few parts, and no new ones are being made, that we are dependent on keeping the old parts 'alive'.

Thanks....

OK, I'm an idiot. I just did this and took all sorts of pictures thinking of making a nice 'how to' thread.. and then I run across this one.. LOL.

Nah, just post it here or link the two together. Two heads are better than one. Just too bad you didn't have this one to help you out.

Just had to use this great thread again and noticed a problem on my '88. On the 3 wires that hold lights I can't seem to get the one that is green/white to work. I put a known working bulb in it and when I turn the lights on and touch it to the brown grnd wires it does not come on. This works to get the lights in the black/blue wires. Is it something other than illumination?
Thanks

Green/White might be for the parking lights. Try it by pulling out the light switch to just the first notch, not with the full on for the headlights.

GRRR...just got it back in yesterday and now neither the speedo OR the odometer are working...very frustrating. Not sure what I did to make them both stop. I may have to ship it off now.
This is really annoying.

Have done the inevitable and proceeded to here with MY speedo today, spent 40 minutes so far, IMO getting the bezel off is a PITA, but will not show any abuse after going back on. I am "home free"! The new odo gear is waiting in the wings, ($10 on this site from a friendly seller for sure!)...........and will be done today; have had the requisite beer already! It was much fun when the needle came off (using the "twist back and forth, pulling up gently" method) and spun in my fingers, came off very suddenly, jabbing the "female" part of the needle shaft connection under my fingernail! No damage to the needle, no biggee, just felt like a little Viet Nam torture.....

Yes! After a few more brews with my Brother who popped in suddenly, got back to the task.
Success! At a real 60, speedo read 59; odometer spinning like new! Gotta love it. Even added miles back on to about correct....
Total time, first shot at it (including swapping speedos again), about three hours. I know, but I care...

OK, just heard back from the speedo guy in Austin...speedo working perfectly on test bench and being shipped back. Now have to keep trying to figure out how to determine what's wrong. I was unable to get any response from the sensor trying to test it but not exactly sure how to do that. I thought maybe I'd fried something in the speedo taking it in and out but obviously not. I'd like to know of theres' something I could test with the wires exposed in the hole in the dash to see if/what signal it's getting from the sensor.

IIRC the sensor is just a reed switch, it should open and close (8?) times per revolution of the output shaft?
