Thanks, is there any simple way to test to see if that is generating a "signal" by checking something at the wires in the hole in the dash that hooks up to the speedo?

Replace the gear in my Speedo today, works great. This surely would not have been an easy task without these perfect instructions / pictures. Even works for us germans.
THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME AND SHARING!!

Thrasher, I have the same number on my face as you,(930 641 508 00) I am wondering how many teeth were on the gear you ordered? There is no gear left for me to count. Thanks

It's been over 5 years, and I'm not having luck finding a confirmation email from the company that may have the part number or tooth count, but this is where I got mine and there is only one option for an '84 (which is what I have): Odometer Gears
It says 20 large/outer teeth and 30 small/inner teeth. Sounds about right.

"I've had some luck removing the needles on VDO speedos by using two butter knives."
- db_cooper - Really a bad idea!!!!! As that's the fastest way to remove the shaft with the needle. Stick to recommending how to find an air leak as a solution for ALL engine problems. Bottom line: Just send the speedo to Pelican, as they have a speedo rebuilding service.

If you want to remove the needle without causing damage, you rotate it all the way until it stops, and then continue applying gentle twisting force until the needle turns on the shaft. As the needle turns, pull gently, and the needle will begin the come off of the shaft. Just continue to twist and pull until the needle comes off of the shaft.
With the needle removed you can then remove the face, which will make the repair of the odometer gear a lot easier. J

Thanks for sharing your techniques on how to get it off Loren.
Since no one on this board does this for a living you should always take your car to a pro and never buy anything from Pelican.

That's exactly right on! See, there're are some (not many) who can think and not just copy & post irrelevant suggestions, e.g. "check for air leaks" (Bob Kontak/JB_Cooper).

I can't take credit for the twist and pull method. I read it somewhere on the forum a while back when I did my own repair. It's good advice and worth repeating though! Much like the seat switch fix using a bottle of aerosol contact cleaner.

"I can't take credit for the twist and pull method."
But you did provide it and probably saved someone from damaging a speedo.

I have a variation that after reading through this entire thread, couldn't find and answer. My issue is with the odometer on an 86 coupe. The odometer does work, but it takes a few miles of driving for it to begin working. It starts out not moving at all, in a few miles it begins counting up at a rate of about 30% actual mileage, and within 10 or 15 minutes of driving it's back up to 100% accuracy in mileage. The speedometer works without issue.
So my question is, since the odometer does work eventually, the issue seems to me that something (the gear) is slipping and only when it warms up, it expands enough to firmly grasp the shaft and begin to turn properly. So before I delve into the repair, any suggestions on who I find the actual gear that I'll need so I can purchase it ahead of time and if indeed my gear is not broken but slipping, can I simply try a drop of glue on the shaft? Any other suggestions welcomed. |

Pelican has the gears, but I don't think glue on the shaft will help. There is lots of grease in there.

My guess is your gear's teeth are just worn and the meshing gear is slipping.

How do you remove the three wires on the back of the speedometer that go in to the red connectors on the picture above? Thanks

You mean the wires going to the three lamps, I'm sure. Just slipa knife blade under the silver 'flange' next to the body of the speedo and gentlly pry up. It can be done with just fingernails, actually. Then you just pull the lampholder out.

anyone have a video of how to remove the speedo needle.?, better yet, the whole process of removal? (I am a visual person.) Not being familiar with a lot of the process its hard to visualize the "twist and turn"
thanks, Aircool |

Just imagine yourself grabbing the head of a bolt or screw that is screwed into something and then 'unscrew' it slowly using light upwards pulling pressure.
