can you transport a 911tub in the back of a truck?

I dont want to haul my 24 foot enclosed trailer 1400 miles to pick up a 911 tub. Do you think I can fit it on top my truck box? I was thinking of running some 2*10's across the top of the tub box, nailing a 2*4 underneath so the 2*10's dont slide from side to side, then sitting the tub on top of that. I have 4 tie down straps rated at 3000lb each. Im guessing a tub with a cage weighs 700lb?
Good idea, bad idea? Been done before?
The truck is a 2005 F*350 so the truck can handle it.
Unless someone wants to earn a few bucks and bring me the tub from Vegas to Alberta, Canada

Depends on the truck.

The main consideration is how much weight can you keep over the bed.

This guy tried to do that with a smaller truck. The truck could technically take the weight, but the distribution was all wrong. It fit fine in my VW pickup, though

Hell, I have a yard full of challenges, ranging from a '56 bug to a '77 911!

Here's the double cab I was tempted to buy - a twin-engined number using two VW engines!

Why yes I did (but that one was destined for demolition). I was tempted to take my '72 to Damon that way also, but my mission with this tub is to save it. BTW, Damon, what's the latest on my '72? I'm moving kind of slow, but steady, on my end--getting things wrapped up on all of the suspension bits so I can make her a roller shortly after I get her back from you. I'll give you a call tomorrow to see how it's coming.

I would say it wouldn't be a problem for that truck. Of course a Dodge would be better suited (see signature). I saw two Polaris 660 ATVs on the back of a Chevy Silverado. They must weigh at least 550 lbs each. The guy had them on some plywood panels. I say go for it.

Im not sure now. The truck is a crew cab short box. So a 6 foot box I think. The car is about 13 feet with no bumpers. So allow for a few inches clearance for the rear window, and the car will be sticking pretty far out the back of the truck, with the balance point somewhere near the tailgate. If it was a long box I think I could do it.

You're right. A short box is useless.

On a shell, the balance point is near the b pillar. Ask me how I know. If you put in on the truck backwards, you'll be OK.

I don't think there is any question an F350 can do it provided it is not a Quadcab with a 6 foot bed. If it has the 8 foot bed, no prob and load it backwards as stated. Just put...well, TOO many straps on it and keep checking them.

On my way back to L.A. from Phoenix just this past weekend a guy carrying a four wheel ATV in the bed of his truck (standing up) had a strap rip and the thing fell out of his bed onto the fast lane of Interstate 10 at speed. Needless to say, there were cars suddenly going every direction and a wall of brake lights in front of me. Only one car, a Camry ended up losing control and smacking full speed into the center divider trying to avoid the bouncing ATV. Airbag, the driver was fine but had to change her underwear. Fun you don't want to have!

dude go for it! just get an "extension" made up of square tubing made up. i have seen versions of this. it sticks into the hitch receiver and can add the necessary length for a stable load. then some cheapo red lights to dangle from the end, and you are off!

Vash is onto something with the extendion out of the receiver hitch. It'll work. Just reinforce the p*ss out of it 'cause if that weld breaks you'll lose the whole thing.

Performance products (truck catalog) sells those extensions. Have a look and you could get a design easily enough. Dumb question but, what is the width of a bare shell? Would it fit "inside" the box? Even if you can only sit it on top of the wheel wells you could use 2X8s (or 2X10)standing on their sides as joists. If they were 8 footers that would support the whole thing. Put blocking between them to keep them from falling over. When you are done use the 2X8s to build a nice work shop for your newly acquired project.
