Newbie Question: Regarding Exhaust Heat

I recently purchased my first Porsche. It's an '83 911SC Coupe. Absolutly love the car. But, I'm still trying to figure out what is normal and what is not.

After driving it for a while and getting the temps up to normal operation. When I park the car, the top(and I presume bottom) of the rear bumper are hot (very hot) to the touch, as is the bottom of the hood, and the place where the info stickers are. I realize that the mufler is directly behind this but is this normal?

Yes, somtimes people vent and or insulate the area around the muffler

Yup, stock muffler, exchangers, etc.

It's normal..However, if it's EXTREMELY hot to the touch, check to make sure all your shields (muffler and cat) are in place.

If you don't have the stock sheet metal heat shield, you could install one and it'll bring the temp down. You could also line the inside of the rear bumper with ThermoTech. It's basically a silica fiber (fiberglass) sheet with a really durable adhesive for applying it to the inside of your bumper (clean it really well first).

I have a 77 930 w/ stainless exhaust/muffler and a red-hot turbo (most of the time ) and the ThermoTech along with the stock Carrera heat shield did the trick. I have a fiberglass RSR rear bumper on it now... I melted one bumperette and bubbled/burned the paint on my stock set-up prior to the heat management mods.

You could also check the timing and fuel mixture. Retarded timing and lean can cause very hot exhaust. I once had a Harley and forgot to advance the distributer after start up. Riding easy down the Parkway after dark didn't notice. After a few minutes looked down and the header pipes were bright red for about 8 inches below the heads

Mine gets really hot too (and I have the heat shield and ThermoTech!). I always open the decklid when parked at home to let the heat out, and more recently run a fan to blow cool air on it too. I figure the heat is doing terrible things to the hoses I spend 2 years replacing, so the less heat the better.

Thanks for all the replys and the comments on my new (first) baby (I've been wanting one since I saw a friend of my dad's doing some pca club racing back when I was 7 yrs old)

I'm not sure if I have any kind of heat barrier around the muffler but I will definatly look into that this weekend. I like the suggestions of insulating the area around the mufler.

In looking through the bently service manual I notice there is supposed to be a shield around the bottom of the cat. but I don't have one on my car. Any big issues here?

Just looking at the picture: Am I correct in not seeing a rear valence????

I too have opened the decklid and turned a fan on it... even though my neighbor thinks I'm being obsessive.

If the rear valence is tha part that is cut out where the exhaust tips exits the, yes this has one. However, the right side was cut open for a dual out muffler..... that was removed sometime before I bought the car.

Look to see if the shield that mates to the valence is still there. The heat shield hugs very close to the valence....

Alright, I've taken a look and didn't find any shield. Any ideas on where I might find one and/or some of the ThermoTech.
