Porsche Crest Made the trip, got the 911!!

Just wanted to say we are finally an official owner. After some time and painstaking searches we found it. 1976 911s needs some tlc (which I'll be asking questions here about) but well worth it. Thanx in advance, Duke.

Looks like it needs more than TLC... it needs a freakin engine!

Good luck with it man! You've found a great place to hang out and ask questions.

Oh sorry, i've got the engine. 2.7 (am i in trouble?) Looks like #5 bent a valve. Got to tear into it. Got a stupid question (is there really any?) but the trans. is a 915 but the gear shifter only has the 4 speed pattern, is this right? Or are there 4 speed 915s? also how do I tell if the cyl. studs and timing chain tensioners have been updated? Engine was done by Motormeister in 2000. Thanx again, Duke

Duke, Do a search on MotorMeister here, and hold on to your hat. Do NOT call them, go to their website or call them. Don't be seduced by their BS.

You'll do best if you post here with questions and follow the advice you get. A LOT of knowledge on this board.

Is the color Peru Red? It appears to have backdated rear bumperettes.

Apex is up near Raleigh, on US 64, so it looks like we are 90 minutes apart, maybe. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Hope you got a good deal on it. Proper rebuilds on a 2.7 are $$, may I suggest a well used 3.0 SC mill to drop in there. Get Waynes books if you have not already.

When I got my '76,a few years back,I had just driven it around town, but when I got on the freeway,I found that it didnt have a fifth gear! Thought I had been conned, but on investigation,
the tab on the gear lever had been bent slightly, probably by trying to bash it across into the 5/reverse plane and it wouldnt go around the 'keeper'---just a slight 'tweek' with a screwdriver and I had 'em all!
Good luck, and if you need to know anything about your car,
you have come to the right place!

I welcome a fellow "middie" to the fold.........don't freak out @ the 2.7, find a good pelican recommended shop or tear it yourself....get the "early style heat exchangers, timecerts, tensioners, front R fender oil cooler (stock or aft.mkt.) & be on your way....looks like you won't have to weld on SC flares....could just have the wrong shift knob.....

HAPPY TRAILS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another bargain that will require many, many man-hours and about $10K+ to make it driveable.
Why don't people ask questions BEFORE they buy?

They don't WANT to know the answer...they just want a shiny red 911 in their driveway! And who can blame them. Let's be nice to our newbies...we were once there ourselves. The fun is in the journey.

To answer one of your questions, yes, the 915 did come with 4 speeds instead of 5 on the base model 911s. Most people paid the extra for the 5-speed. It was called something other than a "915", but it is basically the same gearbox minus the fifth cog. I think it was in 1978 when the five speed became standard on the non-turbo cars.

Then again it could just be the knob. Best of luck,
