Wider boots on my SC.

I have been considering replacing my rather old and battered Fuch's for new 17" bling, and have had a looking at the Lindsey Racing site (http://www.lindseyracing.com). My first question is how wide can I go on my SC before I need to do some metal work? Could I fit 17x8 on the front and 17x11 on the back - or will that give me problems with rubbing etc??

I doubt 11's would fit in back without RSR flares or something similar. At anything above 9's you start getting trapped between the fender and swing plate. I have 8x16's in front and 9.5x16's in the back and that seems to fill things up pretty well.

I had 7 & 8 x16 fuchs on before the suspension update and that was without any other changes. When I went to 8 & 9 x16 Fuchs I needed to roll the fender lips. I know you said without metal work, but with a small bit of metal work you can fit 8.5 x 17 in front and 10 x 17 in rear. I had to roll the fender lips and slightly hammer the inner body wheelwell walls in the rear where there was a slight rub. I also moved the oil lines down one notch in the bracket and whizzed off the extra bolt length outside one nut on the spring plate. I have put in 2 degrees negative camber in front and 3 degrees negative camber in rear for the track so that helps a bit. Seems like a bit of work but I couldn't pass up a deal on these Kinesis so I made them work.

If you truely want pretty much of a bolt on, use no bigger than ~+27&#177 3mm ET front 8s w/ 225/45 and ~+15 mm ET rear 9s w/255/40 tires.

Yes, you can go bigger but it's a lot of work, often involves paint, grenerally results in a tire that is too tall and is not the easiest to live w/ on the street.

For racing yes, by all means go to 235 or 245 fronts and 275 rears, but on the street there is too much down side compared to the very minor upside.

I have a 79SC
205/50 17 in the front
255/40 17 in the rear
I lowered it as far as possible.
I rolled the front fenders and haven't had any problems with clearance.
I used a 1" dowel placed it between the tire and fender and rocked the car back and forth. I cracked some paint off so for the faint hearted don't do it. My paint is a little rough and it is a daily driver so I was more concerned with performance than looks.

The picture in my profile shows the car before lowering.

A friend o f mine was selling me his 8 &9 x 16 Fuchs so he brought them to the track. I tried them on in the parking lot of the hotel the night before and they were rubbing the fender lips. Luckily someone had the official Porsche aluminum baseball bat tool. That just got me on the track the next day. when i got home i hade a friend in the body shop business roll the lips. A very cool tool that attaches to your hub and arcs around the lip folding them under. worked nice.

Thank you, but Ships to: N. and S. America (not EU), and I would think it better to find someone with the tool to do the job for me then pay all that for a tool I will only use once?!?

I also used a souvenir baseball bat from a ball game I attended.

I jacked the car up letting the wheels and tires hang down. stick the bat in the space between the tire and the fender lip and using the leverage from the bat on the tire push the bat handle down which will push the fat end out. wedge the lips under folding the lip against the fender wall. Work your way around the wheel well. you dont need to fold the whole circumfrence of the lip. just where it will rub. maybe 6-8 inches or so from the top middle of the wheel well. just be forewarned, if you are worried about cracking the paint on the lips I wouldnt do it this way. maybe on a hot summer day and a heat gun might make it better. The tease of 8's and 9's on the car outweighed a little cracked paint inside the wheel well.

Hey Pål !

There is just no end to your upgrade visions this winter, is there ??!!

On the topic, I went the other way. My car "came" with rolled fenders, 17" bling rims. Tossed them (you want them ?) for classic 16" Fuchs.
