different profiles of 8" wheels

Hi,
I am contemplating the move to 7" /8" wheels from the existing 6"/7" x 16. I've been shopping,....casually, and it seems like there are 2 different profiles, especially noticeable on the rears,...the 8"s. Some appear to have a long angled section, and some appear to be more stepped. Is this relative to year manufactured?

Also, any comments on those of you that have moved to 15" down from 16"s, same diameter? It is appealing to me as it seems it could reduce unsprung weight and help improve acceleration,...assuming I stay with the same aspect ratio. I know I will screw up the speedo etc,..don't really care about that.

Rich-Can you post a pic of the wheels you've seen that look different? I'm not aware of any 911 16x8's that had a different appearance.

There are some custom made wheels out there that use fuchs centers and aftermarket barrels. Those often have a stepped appearance.

There are no different "profiles" as far as I know. As others have mentioned the 8" fuchs that have the 951 offsets were spec'd on the 944 and differ from the 8" spec'd on the 911 to accomadate caliper clearance issues. To use 8's on the front of your 911 you have to use the 951 offset.

The 15" wheel is something I would consider if I were doing alot of Auto-X. I don't think they look nearly as nice as a set of 16's though.

the 911 8 does have ~.5" extra caliper clearance, but that isn't immediately apparant. The o/s differs from the 911 8 as well +23.3mm for the 944/951 and +10.6mm for the 911.

The most obvious difference(to me) is the counter sunk lugs on the 944/951 8, also used on the 9 but not on the 911 8.

There were no 8x15s w/ an o/s other than the 911 ET of 10.6

THANKS to all!!! I guess the wheels I have seen for sale recently are the 951 wheels. They were offered as fitting 911/930 and I guess they will fit, but have a different offsett.

There are indeed two different profiles for the 16X8 rear wheels (not the 951 front wheels). I have a pair on my Carrera right now:



I think these have two slightly different part numbers - heading out the door right now but I'll look it up later. These wheels have identical backspacing and offset, but the profile is different on the backside of the spokes. Left side of the photo is the inside of the wheels. They look identical on the outside.

They were offered as fitting 911/930 and I guess they will fit, but have a different offsett.

If you followed the link AES posted you would find the 944/951 +23.3mm Et wheels can be used on the front of a 911 or w/ spacers on the back of a 911

The 911 +10.6mm ET wheels on the other hand can only be used on the back of an SC/Carrera flared 911 or the front of a 930 flared 911.

The fit isn't always the easiest or best though.

I found my notes from when I bought these wheels from Don.

One of the above is P/N 911 361 020 45 (original 8X16 Turbo fitment)

The other one is P/N 911 362 117 00 (factory later superceded the first number to this number).

But I don't know which of the above is which. However they both have the same offset (10.6mm) and backspacing (120mm) so they function exactly the same. The only other difference I can recall is that one had square edges on the valve stem hole and the other one had a chamfer.
