Jimmy Deering experience--mobile Porsche mechanic

Wanted to give an update of my experience with Jimmy Deering "Bay Area Porsche Mobile Mechanic."
He came to my place and installed new brakes (pads, rotors, fluid), shocks, and strut tower brace. In the process he found that my front wheel bearings were shot and made a quick call to a local parts supplier so that I could pick them up within the hour. He fixed my seat and trimmed a metal brace that made the seat lower. He fixed a few nagging rattles and any other little thing I asked. He stayed for approx 9 hours and charged me about $230 which was half price do to a promo that is now ended. I gave him $300 and knew that I would have him back to do all my future work.
He was very polite, eager to answer any questions, and willing to do any work that you might just think of.
I came away from the experience thinking that anyone in the bay area who takes their car to a shop and pays through the nose is a masochistic. I simply could not get this kind of service and attention to detail at ANY cost. Jimmy has done work in the bay area ranging from Sacramento to Monterey and everything in between. He specializes...let me rephrase that..he will ONLY work on 911 model years 89 and older.
I truely believe that if more people knew and had an experience with him that they would never take their car to their local shop again.
On top of everything he calls me a few days later asking how the car is doing....nuff said.

How lucky are we? Jimmy Deering and Tom Amon. You would have to think this service would fly near any major urban area.

I think these kind of mobile services are on the increase. It's just too damn expensive to maintain a shop if you want to keep small. Down here in SoCal, we have a mobile welder who has done work on many Pelican's cars, either showing up at a shop, or at a residence. I've seen his work and it's excellent.

Not naming any names, the actual customers can do that if they wish. But, I wonder if we have a Jimmy or a Tom? Kudos to both!

I can't imagine making a living doing this for $25/hour...as great as this seems from the end-user view ( $230 over 9 hours on-site)...

Maybe it's the promo rate? ....going to a more normal $50/hr otherwise?

Shops can hardly make a go of it for $60/hr labor....and this guy's travel time has to be covered too...

????

Hey Wil,

Promo rate, both Tom and Jimmy normally charge $50/hour, plus a travel fee.

The kicker for me is that I can do most of the prep and reassembly work myself, saving even more money over a shop. In addition, I get to watch and learn, everytime.

These guys are great !!!

Garage
These guys can obviously charge substantially less because they don't have to pay for overhead including, rent, electricity, shop help, water, building maintenance, insurance, etc.....

I well aware of Jimmy and Tom's expertise. They are hard workers and deserve a raise. Or like one fellow gave a excellent tip. Tips are good.

Will, I don't know of any shops working for a 60/hr rate. Some body shops are down around 75, but everything is flat rated and it usually works out to about twice that. Andial is 95 and my local dealer is 110.

As a comparison, being a master carpenter, I get 65 for repairs to windows and doors, 45 for finish carpentry and 35 for sweeping the floor or whatever they want me to do that doesn't take my $8000 of tools to complete. So, I think Tom and Jimmy are in the market about where they should be for their skills alone (w/o overhead of a brick and mortar).
