I've never been so dissapointed....
Saw my first Cayman tonight,,, parked at my gym..
Granted it was dirty, and black ( tough to keep clean here in NH), just couldn't get excited about it. Was it just me??? There's not a day that goes by that I don't get up walk through my garage, see my two 930's sitting there and get a smile on my face.. I don't think that could ever happen with the Cayman..

The thrill is gone. Patience, it will look better twenty years old.

I saw my first one yesterday.
It was silver and yes, it looked good but it did not make me hang around and take in every line like an older 911 did (or still would). I think it may be age related. I am over 50

You should have checked it out from the rear...because that's the only way most of us are gonna see it...

Janus, give me some credit ( I check almost everything out from the rear!).

Trust me, it's not age related.
Saw one the other day as well. It did not appeal to me.. go figure. And as far as seeing it from the rear implying that it's faster than our ancient 911s.. I think there are a few dedicated 911 drivers who could make that equation flip around It's a better car no doubt, for this day and age. All of this is JMO and the world is what it is. |

Porsche has come along way since our cars were designed more than 40 years ago. As fast and maneuverable as our cars may be they are no match for the Cayman when it comes to covering a lot of ground over twisty roads very quickly.
Are the old 911's more FUN over those same roads? More than likely, yes. |

It really is not my intention to Cayman bash. But, I have to say, I was at my local dealer that had half a dozen Cayman's on display along with every other current model Porsche. There was an early RS Clone parked there too that must have belonged to a customer. I have to say, the only other cars that could hold a candle to the RS Clone were the Carrera GT and GT3. Everything else was really a notch or two below in my book.

I saw my first Cayman at the dealer in Calgary. I stopped by the showroom after my alignment just to see the Cayman. I looked at it for about two minutes, opened the door, sat in it, thought "my god this reminds me of my 350Z", got out and left.
I didn't hate it. I didn't like it. My wife was relieved.

"my god this reminds me of my 350Z",
I didn't want to say it, but it was a little too "rice" for me

As for the looks I think the Caymen is Ok, but it still doesn't have the distinctive look of a classic 911. It's interesting how the local PCA events always have crowds around the classic Porsches while the newer ones don't draw much attention. I did take the Caymen for a test drive and found that is was very solid and refined.

I think the Cayman is the best looking "second tier" car the company has ever created. And it's going to break some Porsche sales records in the next few years.

"As for the looks I think the Caymen is Ok, but it still doesn't have the distinctive look of a classic 911." Gee, well guess what it is not a 911 and further even the 997 do not look like classic 911 it is called evolution. For the sake of the marque I hope that the Cayman appeals to some 16 year old, every bit as much as the 86 930 did to me when I was of a like age.

I think it has a really neat look, in person, in the right colors. It is a bit long in the nose for me, but it has a bit of 246 Dino to it, and thats never a bad thing.
The interior is cool, but not "special" enough. Not many cars really get me revved up, but the Carrera GT, the E46 M3, the GT2/3, the Bugatti, and the new Aston V8 are cars I could see in my garage. But all it takes is $$$....LOLO, and I am a couple nickles shy...ok, maybe a dozen shy for the Veyron!

i live in the middle of LA and have seen 100- no joke. it's not for me and i find no passion in the design- driven 3 (a biz associate owns 17 dealerships including a Pcar Dealership)--- the car drives great, actually a lot of "talk" to the driver and feels very responsive- not raw like my 88 coupe- i like the raw, primitive, beasty appeal but the cayman could kick my carreras ass- thing is, im still growing with the carrera so im happy- i guess my next step would be a 993 tt or early rs (73, give me some cash!)- anyway, cayman drives nice, looks like a toy car, kinda dull- i never liked the looks of the boxster either though ive driven a couple s's and they're pretty nice!- again, wouldn't own one though- dont know why, just wouldn't and i could afford a newish boxster s- im all caught up in the 911 thing- crazy me. no bad to anyone owning a cayman though- im more proud to see another Pcar of any type than just some other car- that's what entusiast is about to me-

It's a LOT more attractive than a Cayenne...

You aren't the only one that's disappointed. The car could have been a lot more, but it's just a filler, between the boxter and the 911. Top gear really hit the nail on the head:
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=top+gear+cayman Of course, Porsche isn't building cars only for fun. They are in it for the money. So, more power to them. I just miss the days when form followed function. Looks aside, I would think that it lends itself well for a normally aspirated 911 engine transplant? Together with some weight reduction, it should make a great toy 20 years down the line. Oh yes, the interior is HORRID! George |

I have to wonder what this thread would have been like (if the internet existed) back in the '60's when the 911 was introduced...all the 356 faithful declaring it to be the downfall of Porsche and the loss of it's soul,etc,etc....Porsche builds awesome cars that sell well. We may not be the people they are building them for at this time however.
