Anyway to tell if an engine has ever been gone through???

Ive got access to a 3.2 engine from an 88 carerra at a good price but has very high miles so Im trying to figure out if I have the engines number, can I do anything to see if this engine has been rebuilt anywhere in its past???
WPOAB0910JS121658 Are there any signs that would be obvious to a trained eye that would indicate that this engine has been freshened up at any point in the past?? Would there be any records using the number above at Porsche that could tell me anything?? Any help would be apreciated. Thanks, Mark
If not, would you pass on an engine that has 190K running well but leaking oil if it has not been gone through?
