1976 912E Price Check
Can someone give me an idea of what a 76 912E in very good all original condition with 57,000 miles is worth?
Thanks in advance Bryan

I think something like that, assuming it's in nice shape, is going for around $10K these days.
Unless it's way underpriced, you don't have to deal with smog in your area, and you plan to put a 170hp Raby engine in it I'd pass. IMHO, a 912E would be kind of annoying to own. It would be slow. It has a 914 2L engine that is choked down by a thermal reactors, EGR, and a smog pump. That engine with the more free flowing heat exchangers was fine in the lighter 914 but makes for a slow 912. There are also a bunch of parts that are unique to the 912E and hard to find. |

An absolutely gorgeous original with about 10k less miles went in the last year for around 12.5K in So. Calif. It still needed a couple of K to bring it ,like new, mostly suspension work.
Anthony, nothing personal please, but you need to drive a well sorted one. They are a great ride and a kick a$$ autocross car. And a good one will pass Calif. smog WO the TRs.

I had one for a bit. Ten grand is just about the top of the market, because for just a bit more, you are into 911 territory.
If you find someone looking specifically for an E, you may get a bit more if it is pretty near perfect. |

In CA they go for good bucks ONLY if the COMPLETE FI and exhaust is there. It's a one off model with a 2.0 914 motor.....the 2.0 came with L Jet FI....in the 914 D Jet.....it came with a special 915/923 trans.......
Outside of CA, they go for more because you can hot rod them....

I have a well sorted 914 with the same engine. It's a blast to drive, mid-engined, and hundreds of pounds lighter than a 912e. But, it's still way underpowered compared to my SC. |

Mine was in very nice shape. I sold it to a friend, who resold it just a month or two ago for $9000.
I don't plan on owning another 912. Pretty underpowered, and a relatively short RPM band. You've got to shift gears pretty frequently to get any performance out of the car. |

I started looking at 912 E jst out of curiosity, but really it seemed like a 912E and a 911S were going for about the same $$.
Here is a '77 911 that is offered for 10,500. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=272052 And there was another mid-year for the same amount in the for sale section I'll find it and add it to the list: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=274778 Just know about the weaknesses of the 2.7L 911 engine before buying a car. The 912E was, however, a great highway cruiser. Once up to speed, it gets over 30 mpg, and with the same big gas tank as the 911, it has a great range.
Great cross country car, but you've gotta use the clutch a lot around town. |

I had a 912E for about ten years; the most grossly underpowered car I ever had. It was a beautiful car, one a parent would buy for their 16 year old child...can't do much with the car & heaven forbid if you burn out the engine...it's a VW engine.
Has anyone seen my old 912E, #90? Sold it about three/four years ago in SoCal? Jeff |
