The Covin replicas are popular in England. I have never really understood why.

Why ???? It's funny, have seen a few when I was a student in England. The build quality is absolute ***** and you can spot them a mile off. They have quite a network, see their techincal website. There is even a dude in there who has a 993 powered Covin.

911s, are relatively inexpensive, buy the real one why a replica. Think it's dumb.

Do they actually use real Porsche parts? What are the suspension pieces from?

From the Covin Technical website

OVERALL MEASUREMENTS
LENGTH 13'9"
WIDTH 6'0"
HEIGHT 4'2"
WHEELBASE 7'3"
TRACK5'0"
KERBSIDE-WEIGHT depending on engine etc 1500 to 1725 lbs

TYRE PRESSURES VARIABLE TO WEIGHT FRONT 22psi REAR 28psi

covin CHASSIs Designed for strength and safety using a combination of backbone and space-frame design with the addition of a safety perimeter rail. jig built. all mounting holes are drilled and tapped.

body construction Main body and panels of GRP. All panels are double skinned with steel reinforced doors and body. major panels bolt on for easy replacement.

engine choice The list of engines to use is vast, but popular choices are... VW, ALFA & Porsche air cooled. FORD CVH, VW GOLF & VAUXHALL Water cooled.

The lighter the engine the better so keep this in mind.

vw transaxle The VW Transaxle will cope with around 150 BHP without problem but DO NOT use drag start pull aways as this will turn it to scrap metal. Once vehicle is moving you can then use the power available reliably.

suspension For Type 3 based Covins I would recommend AVO Pro Race fully adjustable coil over shocks all round.

steering Standard Type 3 steering box. If Porsche steering wheel is to be used then MK1 Golf column can be modified to fit.

Dave - I certainly wouldn't say that Covins are popular here - they're usually piles of s**t !

Never could understand the concept of a replica of a readily-available/accessible car - & that's from someone who's built a number of replicas (Jaguar C- & D-types, Dino-engined Lancia Stratos).

How do you spot them? I looked at the website and they look like a 911 to me.

Eastiest way to spot them is the 'Q' on the number plate (tag). Pretty sure this indicates stolen / recovered / insurance write off / home build. Only way around this is to buy a non-year dependent or private tag (as on the black car above). Andyjboy may well be able to clarify this.

In the UK people generally steer clear of 'Q' plate cars.

andyjboy- just having a lil fun with the blokes.

Heck our side of the pond has the bradley GT, lazer 917, Aztec , and other such interpretations on how to torture the public with jaundiced eye recreations. Anyone remember the Custom Cloud?

so the Covin at least has a familiar shape that is much closer than our offerings.

But of course you are correct; cobbled up pieces of .......

The finish of the car is so different from the actual thing, panels dont line up. The cars on the website are probably the "cream" of the Covin community. Majority of them just look like *****.

Why did someone pay $3600 for that? With what it will take to get it in running condition you could have a nice 944 or many other reliable used cars. I'll never understand how some people think.

FWIU, many of the rubber, plastic and metal components are FG. This opens up a world of hurt for finish and proper appearance.

I don't get it, either - why have a replica when the originals are not hard to find??? Some replicas make a little more sense - remember the Excaliber, kind of a retread of the legendary Mercedes SSK? Ugly, yes, but at least it tried to fill an empty niche - namely tasteless turds with $$$. This makes no sense at all.

I'm sorry, I had nothing better to do than have a look the Covin site.

You have to see the fit and finish of the bodywork...

http://covintechnical.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/alan_jones.htm

Check the second pic - looks like it has been in front end smash.

Can't wait to see the comments on this one.

i know a perfectly good reason for having one of these: the next time a tv or movie production company calls for a car to blow up or burn- voila! we save another real 911

After checking out the eBay auction, I decided to do a little bit of digging to see what being a ‘Covin’ enthusiast is all about.

Check out this link and scroll down to the part about getting married, doing your best to ignore the troubling technical details of this ‘car’.

If his wife didn’t call off the wedding when he pulled out his card, I’m guessing the marriage will endure ANYTHING!
