Drove a '65 from '83-'86, green, nicknamed "Skunk". Of course, I wish I still had it.

VW first
First car was a '57 beetle small back window - all 36 hp of it! but bulletproof. After that owned Types 2,3,4 in various forms over the years. You can't get it out of the blood, unfortunately.

First one was a 70 beetle followed by a 54 oval on a 70 chassis with irs rear end and a 2180cc highly strung motor that did wheelies. lots of fun. have lost count of how many vw the family owned.

Absolutely - had many Bealtes in my late teens which I would buy, fix up and sell off. From memory I had as many as 5 at one time. All '62 to '71 vintage.
What a GREAT little car.

1966 Super Blue 6 volt beetle. Rebuilt the top end on a 1200cc engine and put it in, as the main bearings were gone in the 1300cc and leaked like a british car.

The first car I bought was a rough '67 in green. I paid $1000 in the summer of 1982. It was drivable but had rotting seats and carpet, poor tires, several dents and a bad Earl Scheib repaint in the past. During the next year I did a suspension and brake overhaul, new tires and repainted the wheels, cosmetic restoration and repaint to the original Java Green, new running boards, improved the interior - added seat belts and other things. Added high back seats. Replaced the scratched door window glass.
Over the next four years I kept improving it. Added a Blaupunkt amplifier and stalk equalizer to complement the Blau head unit. Installed a rebuilt transmission - it wasn't any quieter. I rebuilt the engine in 1987 - just because. I sold it for a song in 1989 - I don't think I got my asking price. I saved the sale sign I made: ![]() My father-in-law owned a Bug when he moved to this area 46 years ago. My wife remembers the family taking trips with one of her now five siblings in the "Way Back". He bought a 1975 Targa some years later and now that car is mine. Thread about my Targa The Targa has gone through many of the same steps - it doesn't have as nice a stereo in it though!

Absolutely
Frist car outof college was a pristine 71 VW Bug. Loved how roomy the car actually was. Ran really smooth, good on gas, cheap to repair and do maintenance.
Since them 67, 68, 69 , 74 Porsche as wekend cars.

I came at it sorta backwards, PRE-bug, I came upon a steal on a '57 Porsche speedster in '58 with 14k on the clock. At the time there were FOUR Porscheii registered in the entire state. It cost $2,475 and served me 144,000 miles before I traded it (On a 1961 Corvair Monza!) After that I loved a series of bugs, 6 Ghias, fastbacks, squarebacks, dunebuggies, busses, campers, and a mint microbus with all the little portholes.
Carefully placed in the garage I have a go-fast 79 Strosek SC with marvelously tweeked suspension...and a prim '76 912-E that I am growing to love...but the most mileage gets racked up by the mildly hopped '68 (or 69? The first year they dropped the "tube-type" bumpers) Bug. Btw: That trusty beetle cost me $45 more than I was quoted for an oil change and valve adjust on the 11;-( It is sorta like reading Playboy while your wife cooks dinner. You may be "interested" in all the fancy, high maintenance furbeloes..but you always come home to cheek to cheek with OLD Faithful. Wasn't it Paul Newman who arrived at the Academy Awards ceremony sandwiched in all the fleet of limos driving a lemon yellow convertible bug? albeit, with a 6-banger stuffed in the back;-) Last edited by dickepoohp; 10-07-2008 at 02:42 AM.. |

My first car was a '59 Beetle, and it was a wonderful car. The next two were VW Vans. I lived in those vans for several years. Later, two 356's, and finally an '87 911. Once the bug bites, it's hard to ever give it up.

70 Beetle was my first car in 1975. Hot rodded a 61 with the large sliding sunroof, next were a series of 914's, then later a 911.

I started with a 74 then a 62, 59, 57 and now a 55 ragtop. I've also owned a 66 notchback, 67 squareback, 59 and 60 singlecab and finally a 60 356. I still own the 55 ragtop that will someday get put back together. I think that may be my retirement project in about 20 years. I bought my first modern Porsche about 3 years ago and really love it but I still miss the feeling of driving an old VW.
Oh, I almost forgot my daily is a 2000 Jetta VR6 that I still really love driving.
