930 Oil Change-Overkill Procedure?
Porsche mechanic, when indicating to him that I was going to change my own oil / filter, indicated the following procedure . Is this too picky?
1. From both the base of the case, and oil tank, remove plugs and drain. Re-torque to 40 ft/ lbs. 2. Add 6 quarts. 3. Start engine, add 3 quarts. 4. Drive car a minimum of 20 minutes 5. Add enough oil, until oil quantity guage "reads". 6. Expect to add 6 quarts. 7. Indicated that I should not attempt to change the filter, as this is complicated, and the maintanance facility should do that. Am I missing something here ? I've changed oils / filters in everthing from pickup trucks , old cars, new vehicles, tractors, etc and the Porsche 930 filter does not look that complicated ? |

Besides the caution about the oil filter, which does seem a bit rediculous ... that mechanic told you to put 15 quarts of oil in the tank ... and that will cause serious problems!!! He also suggested using the oil-level gauge as the indicator, rather than the dipstick!
I concur with putting in 9 qt before driving, but after warming up and driving I wouldn't put in more than an additional 2 qt, unless it is still below the minimum mark on the dipstick, when hot and idling on level ground! Overfilled oil tanks cause a real mess ... smoking, oil blown out all over the engine, and into the air cleaner assembly, etc. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

When I change my oil in my Sc I add 12qts all at one time then usually it will take another 1/2 qt after driving for a few minutes, I would be more concerned with just adding a few qts and starting motor, there is a lot of piping and the coolers take a lot of oil it would seem to me you'd have the oil light flashing at you and potential for starvation

Thanks everybody for your responses. Yesterday I actually "observed" the mechanic
perform this "complicated" task ! Geez, can't figure why all the hype over the phone. The oil adding procedure that he ACTUALLY performed consisted of adding 6 quarts, then started the car. Added another 3 with the engine running. Then drove the car, getting the temp into the operating range. Then, with the car running, slowly added enough oil to bring the quantity guage up to the top of the white arch. That amounted to exactly an additional 1 quart. The process of changing the filter: of the 5 vehicles I own, the 930 has by far, the easiest access to the filter itself, and is certainly the quickest to change . The timing was not right, or I would have really ribbed him as to this complicated process of filter changing . Thanks again everyone for your valuable input ! |
