Tell me about 81 911's
A client and good friend is looking at a Turbo Bodied 1981 911. Since I am a 70's kinda guy (PORSCHE wise) I thought I would ask my friends here for some exact info to better help him out.
Did the factory make a normially aspirated Turbo Body car in 81? What motor is it likly to have? 3.0 or 3.3? Was Porsche using the Carrera Tensioners in 81 as a factory installed item? Are there any problem areas to look for other than the normal stuff? Considering the motor is in top trim with all reciepts (I havent seen them yet)the body in A-1 condition, as is the interior, and the car has 68K miles, what is a fare price for him to pay? |

I can answer some for you.
1) No factory widebodies until mid-80s. 2) All SCs have 3.0L w/CIS. 3) No Carrera tensioners on stock SCs. 4) Altered car - could be hidden problems. 5) It everything is A-1 the car could be worth $15 to $20K depending on where you live. |

wide body is either a conversion or a gray market turbo converted to a naturally aspirated engine(not very likely)
Take a look at the 73T wide body on ebay for what happens to fiberglass conversions in the long run! An 81 will be galvanized, but not on the flares and where they were welded if steel flares were used, which could have hidden corrosion, so care should be taken regarding inspection of the body's integrity Fare price depends on the quality of the conversion and the car, a decent looking SC with glass flairs non original engine and 68K on the clock is not worth much in my opinion 10K maybe; an SC with original engine, 19 years or receipts supporting the 68K miles, steel flares welded on to factory 930 standards, wide rims to fill the flares, and a Porsche quality paint job could go for 20K or more Good luck to your friend |

I own an 81 911SC that I bought last winter. It had 168000 miles on it and was in ok condition. I had the engine and transmission fully rebuilt. I had a C2 kit and RS wing put on. New paint to original color. All new interior. New C2 wheels and ZR rated tires. Many other brake, suspension, lighting upgrades, ETC... I am into the car about $23000. It is like having a 93 RS America at half the price with the advantage of much lower insurance cost. Great powere to weight ratio (12.5lb/hp) RS America has about a 11.5lb/hp ratio.
Everyone has their own opinion on what SCs should go for. I have seen as little as $7500 for a good looking 82 SC that had no compression and needed a rebuil. I have also seen a compleat rebuild (everything) like mine that was up to over $30000 by the time it left the shop. |
