Does anyone recognize this flywheel. It measures the same as an early 901, same pilot bearing but the starter gear has 109 teeth, not 130 teeth like I was hoping for it to mate with my 901/914 box?
Also the actual ring depth is larger meaning my pressure plate won't bolt on -same registers for the 6 bolts but the bolt-heads are below the surface before they're tight.

Could it be from a 4 speed 901 gearbox?

901 starter gear flywheel
This flywheel matches up to the starter gear from the 356. The starter has a 1/2 dome shroud and outboard bearing at the end of the drive gear.
The 1964 engine numbers started with 900 101 - installed in the very first production car - (engines up to "#100" were for testing only), so this flywheel is for the first 1500 cars, both the 1964 901's/911's and the, up to May/June, 1965 911. (912's started in July/August of 1965). Let the early car guys know about this. This is a rare item. Bob |

Good documenting guys.
Even more unique is the self-supported starter Bendix for the 109 tooth flywheel. I looked long and hard for one in the early ‘70s. I used it to allow use of a 109 tooth (6V) 356 & VW flywheels on my 901 casting engine dyno. I think the only good use for a 109 tooth flywheel today is for display purposes. If you have a very early 901 engine, this is desirable for people to look at. Best, Grady

It would take a fairly determined concours judge to tell the difference. That said, such an item would be of interest to members of the 232 registry. A link to this post over on early S might bring some from the woodwork.

901/911 232 Registry
The "Early 911 Porsche 232 Registry" is the 1964 cars. It includes 82 Model 901 and 150 of the first 911's (all of the 9 series production cars made in 1964).
There are about 50 of these cars accounted for in the world. 4 of those have been confirmed destroyed. I'll let the guys know there are some flywheels available. With international mail service don't expect responce for about a month or two. Bob |
