[QUOTE=Hugh R;3539859]
Back on topic, I haven't driven my pcar 2,000 miles, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so. QUOTE] S Calif to N Arizona and Grand Canyon area driving is right down the block. Stay off the main arteries and the limit is only the ability of your suspension to ride the 2 laners and your oil cooling. It's a great wild ride. You only have to slow down when you spot the seldom seen oncoming car if you travel off the main tourist season.. just in case of instant on in the oncoming 4-wheeler.

Hugh,
Just to answer your question, my car doesn't leak oil onto the floor, but it does leak oil onto the left heat exchanger. Once there, I assume it just burns away. The car doesn't smoke either, I assume it's just usage thru the valve guides, etc. Sometime in the future, I'll do a top end rebuild. This being said, I guess there's no valid reason why I couldn't drive it across country, I just need to bring extra Rotella.

Chris,
Lesley and I did a 625km trip a couple of weeks ago on a bright clear Saturday up south of Algonquin and across to Haliburton and back. The scenery was great and the car ran beautifully. Go for it!

Finally - for those of you still reading - some pics.
At least, I hope so, as Mozilla only allows you to post a link. We'll see. Mountain pass in northern California. ![]() Mount Rundle near Field, B.C. ![]() What the back seat of a 911 is for. ![]() MGBs awaiting restoration and then vintage racing. ![]() Mount Shasta. ![]() Getting close to home.

I almost thought I was looking at my car from that first pic at the summit. Very close on the color (mine is Zinc Metallic) and condition, if not the year.
I drove mine home when I bought it - from Saratoga Springs to Savannah GA. What a great way to get acquainted with a new (to me) car! I took the secondaries down through NY and CT, and it was a great trip overall. I wasn't too concerned about the trip - I knew the PO well (he's kinfolk), and the car had 50K miles on it. I"m loving these road trip stories! There are so many great places in the general vicinity I'd like to try (like the Dragon) and see (blue Ridge Mountains), that aren't just next door.

I think I saw an SC yesterday that was Zinc metallic.
Mine is meteor grey. I like the greys and silvers. Tasteful - especially with a black interior - unlike some of the Porsche colour schemes from the 70s and 80s!

I have taken 1,000 mile trips up the California coast each summer for the past four years in my 1987 Carrera Targa. I only have 170,000 miles on the clock though. I always feel a sense of gratitude toward the old girl at trips end, because she has come through flawlessly each time. I always make the trip with the Targa top stowed away. Open air motoring intensifies the sense of adventure and puts one so much more in touch with the surroundings. For the cost of admission, it is hard to match an air cooled open top Porsche for thrills on a long trip. I love it! Mike |

Mike -
The PCH is a great drive. I've done it twice in an MGB. Hope to do it in the 911 next summer. 170K - just getting run in! Craig

I sure love driving, this is going to be a bit diff from the 911. Happy driving to all Peter. PS have threads in the 914 forum." I think I want to buy a 914 but......."

I just got my 84 911 Targa and took it away for the weekend to Eastern PA - about 125 miles from New York City. My wife took the kids in the Honda Pilot (I have not figured out two car seats yet!)
I had a BLAST - probably put about 400 miles on the car with about 150 on winding back country roads. I drive the car mainly in Brooklyn, New York City to take my son to school (beats the tedium of the Honda). Absolutely bought the car to DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE. And if I wear this one out, I will buy another one. I found myself getting really sleepy in the Honda Pilot. It is a very comfortable BIG car that handles fine for an SUV - but I felt like I was getting way to lax in driving it. The 911 has certainly woken me up. I definitely don't want to break down in the wilderness - but that is why I have the towing plan and a tool kit. These cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed. Autocross is next for me!
