Porsche Crest Nd advice to install G50 6 spd in 87 911

What is needed to install a 993 6 spd trans in my 87 911?
Anyone done this?
Any advice would be appreciated now that I have a tranny available.
Thanks,
Len@autosportengineering.com

From your address, I'm sure that you know that this is a non trivial project

these guys did it

personally I would just buy a 964 chassis and go from there

The people at the link you gave did this conversion to a 915 car, which was serious surgery as you state. The '87 model comes with a 5-speed G50 already and I've heard that the conversion is much easier.

The 964 still had a 5-speed...to get a 6-speed he'd have to start with a 993.

A fellow on here called Dennis Kalma (can't think of his username right now) was working through this project awhile ago and still is to the best of my knowledge. Search here and you'll probably find his thread on it.

The 993 six speed is alot longer than the g-50/01

The g-50 that's in the 964 is longer than the g-50/01

This will keep you busy - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=260064

Sheez Bill...no need to get huffy...Noo Yaaahkers

A lot of misinformation gets posted here and I was just trying to help. I should have looked at your post count and realized you knew what you were talking about. It appears I insulted your intelligence and I apologize.

I'm curious why you recommended the 964...will a 6-speed G50 fit easily?

yes, there is a lot of bad info and you have posted some of it.

yes, a 964 and 993 g50 are interchangeble no sweat at all.

yes, a 915 and early g50 are sort of swapable w/ a lot of work, but they are at least sort of close to each other.

The degree of difficulty of going from a 915 or an early g50 to a later g50 is orders of magnitude greater.

Here are all of the transmission variants used thru '879 911, yes the g50 is slightly bigger but the are all similarly mounted

Here's a 993 g50

here a 964 g50

I just looked for a half hour and can't find the website, and I think there's a DDK thread on it (or another European Porsche BBS), but someone in France made a Gulf Blue 3.0RS "replica" that included a 3.6 based motor and 6 speed transmission. There were very detailed pictures of his installation and how he modified the rear of the tunnel and the rear seats.

In case anyone might have it bookmarked, the car was Gulf blue with Gulf livery, and the owner even cut and machined some Fuchs centers and welded them to BBS rims halves. He also welded up all the extraneous holes in the chassis, including the little holes in the gauge panel of the dashboard.

Wow, maybe I should sell the 6 spd w Ltd slip I just bought.
Looks like much too much work for me.
I really like the 964 chassis.
Perhaps I should keep the 6 spd, sell my 87 and buy a 964 I can put the 6 spd into.
Thanks guys.

You need to think long and hard about what you want and what you want to do w/ the car.

each chassis has unique featutrres that wil be desireable to some. Theo wanted the lok of an early racecar but the guts of a modern racecar. He could have saved a lot of money by starting w/ a 964 and just backdating the body.

If you are truly in love w/ your '87(but don't want to race) re-gear, re-engine, re-brake, re-suspend, re-wheel, re-tire etc. to your hearts content. A 3.6 w/ regeard early g50 5 spd, 930 brakes and decent suspension and tires is a blast

If you have to have a 6 spd 964 or 993 is the best place to start. If you want it all, a 993 is the best place to start, even the base ones came w/ mostly better parts than even a 964

Some like Denis like the challange as much as the final product, but to pay some one else to do it is going to be cost prohibitive.
