I use the stock Bosch unit, which is all you need. The Permatune units don't have that good of a reputation on the 911's. I also use the Pertronix pointless ignition, and their flamethrower coil. I think any more than that and you're wasting your money, IMHO.

You won't notice a difference (seat of the pants) from one mfg to the other.
I've heard the new Permatunes are better; they're cheaper than the Bosch also.

You can't start your car. Or it dies while running.

Or it runs poorly after it gets hot.

Permatune

Well, I bought a Permatune box last spring, and it improved both start-up and smelly exhaust fumes... I guess the old Bosch was a bit tired, but the permatune really gave much more power everywhere, but especially at the top end, the difference was really big.
I am very satisfied with the Permatune box in my 2.7S ('75).

If you have a few hours to search, there are reams of material on this topic here...

Warren Hall preferred the stock Bosch unit to any offered in the aftermarket. 'Nuff said.

I think that you are looking for carbs and SSIs...not a different ignition system.
