Stone guards over repaint

How long after a repaint do you have to wait to put the black stone guards back on your fenders? I'm getting conflicting information.

If it's to minimize discoloration..who cares?...the stoneguards will be semi-permanent anyway... no ?

If on the basis of paint cure time and such, ask your painter who did the work or the product spec sheets. In absence of that, I would say 30+ days.

I am sure you will continue to get conflicting reports here as well. I would wait at least 30 days as well. I waited a lot more than that and its still removed paint when I wanted to remove mine. Now im just stuck with them until I do a repaint.

Make sure that you want the stone guards permanently.

With a repaint, you are almost guaranteed to have the paint pull off when you remove them.
Even if you use a heat gun and are very careful.

Hey I have a widebody just got it repainted. I am not sure I want stone guards. How bad will my paint get chipped up without them?

Thanks for the replies. I'll wait it out but continue to drive the car of course. Guess any stone chips I get in that area now will be covered up by the stone guards so no worries.

Jim, I'd get the painter's recommendation. Of course, the other responses are dead on.

BTW, who did your work? Just for reference, of course...

My widebody fenders are just asking for stone chips but I think it looks better without the stone guards. Since I had only one fender repainted and the other still has its stone guard I'm going to put the stone guard back on. With that said the stone guard didn't totally protect my fender from chips 'cause stones know how to miss the stone guard.

Taylor Color in Simpsonville. They did a nice job on my father in law's '54 Ford and my '62 VW. Just before I came in they did the hood on someone's pristine concours Guards red Carrera coupe. I would love to find out who it belongs to. They had enough paint to do my fender and rocker panels. Very happy with the results.

How about using the black stoneguards as a template for making some with the clear 3M stoneshield or a non-adhesive vinyl material?

Cool. That's right up the street from where I work. Of course, you know that...

Honestly, I never knew there was a body shop back there.

Can't wait to see their work soon.

I bought the black stone guards and used them only for a pattern for clear plastic that I got at a sign company. They work great .

This is a good idea. Make sure you get 3M... some of (most of) the other stuff turns yellow after a while.
