Actually, there's an abandoned taxiway or runway where they do autocross. I was there a couple of weekends ago and could hear the tires screeching from the restaurant!

I helped my region last year with the autox at the airport. I've always wanted to set up something that has more space than the Camarillo airport....like Point Mugu Naval Base. From what I was told, they used to run them out there when the base commander was Porsche-friendly. Then it changed but one never knows....

I wanted to set up the autox course like a scaled-down version of LeMans....

My Dad was VP of PCA Santa Barbara Region in 1990 and 1991 and President in 1992. PCA Santa Barbara Region ran Autocrosses back then at Pt. Mugu when the VP of PCA Santa Barbara Region was a Navy Commander (not base Commander) at Pt Mugu.

It would be nice to be able to get back to Pt Mugu again as the courses were much better than at the Camarillo Airport. Runway 27 at Pt Mugu was closed on the wekends back then (maybe still is ???). We were able to use half of Runway 27 and taxiway and ramp areas. The courses were long, wide, and fast (for an Autocross) and the turns were nice sweepers that flowed into straights, slaloms, and a few tighter twisties for fun.:D PCA-Santa Barbara Region donated half of the entry fees to the Navy MWR fund (Morale Welfare and Recreation) and let navy personnel enter free of charge.

Also, on the 4th of July 1993 (or 1992?, check with TRE Dave) we even had a POC Club Race there.! And a fireworks show that night.:D

There were never any safety or security issues. Everyone was well behaved.

If anyone here has any contacts (horsepower) at Pt Mugu and can possibly get us back in there, let me know. My Dad would be more than happy to help out and provide more background information/history.

Of course in these days of increased security due to terrorist concerns we may be out of luck. However the Pt Mugu Airshow draws maybe 50,000 people each day...

I haven't done a pcar event since January. I'm up for something either day. Even just a drive up to Ventura/Santa Barbara and back with breakfast or lunch thrown in the mix. Something more would be dessert.

Wow... That post was a Beautiful Thing, Flieger. I'd drive down to Mugu from Santa Cruz to scrub my tires on that course and help kick down to the sailors' morale and welfare fund. Is that airstrip even commissioned today? Some of our greatest circuits (Sebring, anybody?) take advantage of our superb 20th century military infrastructure. Hot damn-O-rama. That looks like big fun.

Flieger 07-30-2008 08:45 PM

Pt. Mugu is still fully operational. I do not know if they still close the runway on the weekends but I would not be surprised if they still do.

Spread the word about the event and maybe someone who has pull with the base will hear. The money talks, too...

Though getting off topic with Pt Mugu airfield, some history is in order:
Henry Valdez did a hot dog cart for the SCCA and PCA autox on the runway at Mugu. While Commander Boughton volunteered his time, events could be held once a month. There was an informal donation procedure to MWR. All went swimmingly along up to and including the POC cup race weekend we put on. A lot of people worked real hard to organize and construct a temporary airfield road course. It had its drawbacks; trying to squeeze enough circuit length for wheel to wheel racing on 1/2 a runway was not as easy as it sounded- more than a few would bowl over the cones and lap times improved dramatically ! :D

But it was a real fun weekend. With the commander's help, we secured the services of the officer's club with a full on dinner, disco music, and followed with a small but fun fireworks show. Basically instead of spending $$ on renting a real track, the money went into having a really good time.

All was well and good after the event till some 1/4 mile asphalt pounder showed up and basically demanded equal access for his amateur drag race group. Said a.p. wanted to put concrete burn out box and christmas tree on the runway. Not exactly where a F-14 would want to land in an emergency. Then there was no straight line interest on the commander's part and the attendant demand for more of his free time, and he naturally refused.

Irked a.p. would not take no for an answer , bugged everyone he knew and after an admiral in washington heard about it, that was the end. PERIOD. With the Commander retiring to another state, our inside political pull evaporated as well.

Fast forward to about 6 years ago. Henry (always thinking) chums up to a well placed few on the base. Some prelim discussions were held and we went for a meet with the new head of MWR and the public activities commander. When discussion of how much over 6 figures the event would bring to MWR, we blanched and bid him a good day. They just are not interested in committing resources to help out anything small. Throw in homeland security for good measure and its Fugetaboutit- no sense beating a dead horse

will find out thursday about gaf and post

Unofficial Ventura show? Isn't that first bit pretty much the MO of Pelican? Just about all our gatherings are unofficial, aren't they? LA to Ventura via the hills of Malibu and PCH, anyone?

I knew about the discussions a few years ago about getting back into Pt. Mugu, but I did not know that MWR was looking for a 6 figure contribution!!

Can we try again? Has there been any change in command or attitudes at the base?

david c. 07-30-2008 09:22 PM

Any sort of autox sounds like a good time to me.

TRE Cup 07-30-2008 09:25 PM

Max, you are welcome to try
I am done jumping thru hoops trying to maneuver the mine fields that government held properties hold in store.

Dave, thanks for the history lesson. SCCA used to run occasional Solo2 events at Pt. Mugu in the late 1980s, early 1990s. I sometimes hit over 90 mph in my C Stock Rx7, which is about 30 mph more than SCCA is really comfortable with - great fun. I always wondered why we stopped.

Not much of Thursday left, but I'm patient. I don't know where all this autocross talk came from, but that's not what I had in mind. There was no AX at Dunkels and no AX at the GAF. That takes a whole 'nother army of volunteers, equipment and an organization that is able to purchase insurance.

I'm talking about a car show/gathering, rolling or not or both. Plain and simple as that. Go race another weekend, OK? Come on down and hang, drive a road, eat a burger, go home happy.

To tell the truth, I thought Ventura was too big anyway. 200 or 300 instead of 2000 or 3000 would suit me, but that's just me. (I have no idea what the actual attendance was.)

I passed a great little VW show up in Solvang a couple of years ago right on this green;

Hey, Milt, would a swap meet be OK with you?

They are so few of them left now days.

Zeke 07-31-2008 03:39 PM

A car show w/o a swap and maybe some entertainment could be a rather dull affair. Let's wait and see what's in the pipeline.

joe payne 07-31-2008 05:21 PM

I vote for cool weather driving. I sweat like a pig in my car. Damn black cars with no air conditioning!
