Hey Ed (crater) that car looks great. Was that the vehicle that was for sale from Euro coll. in Costa Mesa?

I've had a '71 T Sportomatic for 20 yrs. and the Sportomatic is very reliable and wonderful if you
drive in the city a lot. I had to rebush the control valve once since I had it. I've hillclimbed it a lot out here and there no difference in times between a 5 spd stick and it against a similar car. You can downshift the Sportomatic like a stick by matching rpm and upshifting is faster. It's a good drive. |

Crate,
Yea it looked like it. If you don't mind me asking.. what did you get it for? If you don't feel comfortable telling no worries! I was looking at the same vehicle, but just figured I should finish what I have first before I engage in another car. Andrew

You guys should cowboy up and do a "Show Us Your Sporto Cars!" or an "Ultimate Sporto Thread!" on here. There must be some cool sporto hot rods out there, too.
Or form your own C.R.A.P.-like interest group, something like Sporto High Intensity Touring, or S.H.I.T. ![]() Brian

HAHAHA, I like it!
![]() Perhaps I'll add it to my sig... Seriously, though, a sporto owners thread is a good idea, it would be interesting to know how many there are on Pelican. Perhaps we could even list some of those rare NOS sporto parts that we're all hoarding as a point of interest

aminter0: I'll PM you if you like but suffice it to say it was a good bit less than what was advertised and much less than asking price at Hershey. I had it PPI'd and came away satisfied with what I was getting for the price, while recognizing that the seller needs to make some money as well.
1982911SCTarga: You can see my car is about as non-hot rod as they come. How long it will stay that way I don't know but my gut tells me not to mess with it at all until I master driving it in its present state, skinny tires, steelies and all. Not so sure about the special interest group though - my family puts up with enough of my S.H.I.T. as it is. Over on the Early S Registry I responded to a post about the sportomatic.org website and offered to help keep it running. I also suggested that a registry of Sporto cars - those few 914s as well as 911s - be developed for all of the reasons described. Not all 911 Sportos are longhoods so folks here who don't go there should be made aware of it as well. Ed

We get lots of C.R.A.P. with our cabriolets, so we're always willing to pitch in and give some S.H.I.T. to other type owners. ![]() I'm also a member of T.U.R.D., but I forget what exactly it stands for aside from the targa part. Sporto on, dudes! Brian

S.H.I.T.
That is too funny! Ed (crater64) - a set of euro rear turns, a good buff and polish and another set of slightly wider wheels won't hurt that car a bit. And it's all returnable to stock too. Always nice to have a second set of wheels available to get a 'new' car feel cheaply and easily.

Scott: The front turn/parking light lenses are tired and merit replacement, so I could do all four. I do want to upgrade my lighting as I consider that a safety issue. Replacing the "sugar scoop" US-spec headlights with H4s is going to be on my to-do list, so Euro-spec lenses all around would be consistent in appearance. I live in a river valley which is often foggy when areas only a few miles away aren't, so I'd like to add fog lights front (through-the-horn-grille) and rear eventually.
I won't hijack this thread any more than I already have - off to start my own and formally introduce myself.

, it's kinda odd but for me, having a Sporto as my first P-car now means that the quirky transmission has become part of the 911 mystique. I can't seperate the transmission from the car in my mind because it's the only way I've ever driven it!

I have been talking with Patrick who runs sportomatic.org - he is looking for someone to take it over and update it. I have volunteered (see thread on Early911S) so I'm hoping to get the site sorted out soon, so keep watching.
Anyone who wants to help or contribute information, drop me a pm. |

I had a 1966 Sportomatic that was sent to the US as a demonstrator. It was at Pray Moters in Connecticut. I bought it from a wholesaler.
They must have tweaked that engine because it would eat platinum plugs in 1000 miles. I drove it as a daily driver summer and winter from 1970 when I bought it getting out of the Army to 1977. I put it in a garage until 1986 when I was going to restore it. By that time the frame was rusted to crap and I sold it. Dont know where it went. Bought a new 1986 Targs that I still have today. |

Coming back 12+ years later to say I still own the car and have made a few upgrades to it.

Fourteen years later and I still own the green car. Here's what it looks like now.
![]() Duh! It doesn't look any different except for the YOM plate. Shame on me. It's currently under the knife getting transformed into a mild hot rod. The Sporto remains.
